The invention provides a composition comprising: (a) a star polymer comprising: (i) a core portion comprising a polyvalent (meth) acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof or a polyvalent divinyl non-acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof; and (ii) at least two arms of polymerized alkyl (meth)acrylate ester; and (b) an oil of lubricating viscosity, wherein the core portion further comprises a functional group of formula (I):&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C(R)(C(&#x2550;O)A)-Y&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein Ris hydrogen, a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; A is nitrogen or oxygen; and Y is a free radical leaving group selected from the group consisting of one or more atoms or groups of atoms which may be transferred by a radical mechanism under the polymerisation conditions, a halogen, an &#x2014;O&#x2014;N&#x2550; group and an &#x2014;S&#x2014;C(&#x2550;S)&#x2014; group. The invention further provides the use of the composition in an oil of lubricating viscosity as a dispersant, a viscosity modifier or a precursor to a dispersant viscosity modifier.

Star polymers and compositions thereof

The present invention provides a process for preparing a polymer, employing the steps of: (1) contacting a free radical initiator; a chain transfer agent containing a thiocarbonyl thio group and a free radical leaving group; and a radically polymerizable monomer, to form a polymer chain; and (2) contacting the polymer chain of step (1) with at least one of a polyvalent coupling agent, a polymerization inhibitor, a grafting acylating agent, an amine and an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further provides compositions and uses for the polymer.

Process for preparing polymers and compositions thereof

A lubricant of (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) a block copolymer of (i) a hydrophobic first block of Calkyl (meth)acrylic units having an average total number of carbon atoms of at least 8; and (ii) a second block of (meth)acrylic units, at least some units of which comprise a heteroatom imparting polar character to the block; (c) an overbased calcium detergent; (d) a phosphorus-containing anti-wear agent that does not contribute to the metal content of the lubricant; and (e) a friction modifier suitable to reduce the static coefficient of friction at a metal-composition interface, is suitable for lubricating a farm tractor.

Farm tractor lubricating composition with good water tolerance

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing (a) 0.1 to 15 wt % of a polymer with (i) a weight average molecular weight of 100,000 to 500,000; and (ii) a shear stability index of 10 to 60; (b) a phosphorus-containing acid, salt, or ester; (c) a dispersant; and (d) an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further provides a method for lubricating a mechanical device with the lubricating composition.

Star polymer lubricating composition

The invention provides a composition comprising: (a) a star polymer comprising: (i) a core portion comprising a polyvalent (meth)acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof or a polyvalent divinyl non-acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof; and (ii) at least two arms of polymerized alkyl(meth)acrylate ester; and (b) an oil of lubricating viscosity, wherein the core portion further comprises a functional group of formula (I):&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C(R)(C(&#x2550;O)A)-Y&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein Ris hydrogen, a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; A is nitrogen or oxygen; and Y is a free radical leaving group selected from the group consisting of one or more atoms or groups of atoms which may be transferred by a radical mechanism under the polymerization conditions, a halogen, an &#x2014;O&#x2014;N&#x2550; group and an &#x2014;S&#x2014;C(&#x2550;S)&#x2014; group. The invention further provides the use of the composition in an oil of lubricating viscosity as a dispersant, a viscosity modifier or a precursor to a dispersant viscosity modifier.

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing (a) a polymer derived from greater than 50 wt % or more of a non-diene monomer, wherein the polymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 2000 to about 200,000, and wherein the polymer has a shear stability index of about 0 to about 25; (b) a phosphorus-containing acid, salt, or ester; (c) an extreme pressure agent, other than a phosphorus-containing acid, salt, or ester; and (d) an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further provides a method for lubricating a mechanical device with the lubricating composition.

A lubricant composition suitable for lubricating an internal combustion engine comprises: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity having a viscosity index of at least 105 and a kinematic viscosity at 100 C of less than 7 mm2s-1; (b) 0.01 to 2 weight percent of a friction modifier represented by the structure [I]; (c) 0.5 to 4 weight percent of a poly(meth)acrylate viscosity modifier polymer; (d) 0 to 500 parts per million by weight of molybdenum in the form of an oil-soluble molybdenum compound; and (e) 0 to 200 parts per million by weight of boron in the form of an oil-soluble boron compound.

A lubricating composition contains an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.5 to 10 percent by weight of a poly(meth)acrylate viscosity modifier polymer comprising (i) 15 weight percent to 35 weight percent monomer units of methyl(meth)acrylate, (ii) 0 to 10 weight percent monomer units of one or more C-Calkyl(meth)acrylates, (iii) 50 to 85 weight percent monomer units of one or more C-Calkyl(meth)acrylates, and (iv) 0 to 10 weight percent monomer units of one or more nitrogen-containing monomers.
