A projection optical system of an image display apparatus that includes a lens system and a concave reflection surface. The lens system is has a positive refractive power as a whole. The concave reflection surface reflects the image light emitted from the lens system toward an object. The projection optical system is configured such that a relationship 0<|Δθ(hmax) Δθ(0.9·hmax)|/θ(hmax)<0.056 is satisfied, where a light beam height from the reference axis is h, an angle with respect to an optical axis height direction of a tangent line of a function Z(h) representing a shape of the concave reflection surface corresponding to the light beam height h is θ(h), an amount of change in the angle θ(h) is Δθ(h), and the light beam height h of a reflection point farthest from the reference axis of the concave reflection surface for reflecting the image light is hmax.

Image display apparatus and projection optical system

An image display apparatus that includes a first light collecting-reflecting device () which image light (L) from an image forming apparatus enters, and a second light collecting-reflecting device () which second light (L), of the image light, having passed through the first light collecting-reflecting device enters. The first light collecting-reflecting device has transmission action and light collecting-reflecting action with respect to the image light. The first light collecting-reflecting device collects and reflects first light (L), of the entering image light, toward a first conversion position in a viewer's eye (). The second light collecting-reflecting device has at least the light collecting-reflecting action with respect to the image light. The second light collecting-reflecting device causes the second light to reenter the first light collecting-reflecting device and collects and reflects the second light toward a second conversion position. The second conversion position is different from the first conversion position in a plane orthogonal to an optical axis of the viewer's eye.

An image display device includes: an optical modulator; and an optical compensation element configured to cancel out phase difference generated within the optical modulator; wherein the optical compensation element is installed in a state in which the brightness of a projected image corresponding to a region having relatively great phase difference within the optical modulator becomes a minimal value, at the minimum driving voltage to be applied to the optical modulator.
