A sports helmet for protecting a head of a wearer, that comprises: an outer shell comprising an external surface of the sports helmet; inner padding disposed between the outer shell and the wearer's head; an adjustment mechanism operable by the wearer to vary an internal volume of the cavity to adjust a fit of the sports helmet on the wearer's head; and a rotational impact protection device disposed between the external surface of the sports helmet and the wearer's head when the sports helmet is worn, the rotational impact protection device comprising a surface movable relative to the external surface of the sports helmet in response to a rotational impact on the outer shell to absorb rotational energy from the rotational impact, the surface of the rotational impact protection device undergoing displacement when the adjustment mechanism is operated by the wearer to vary the internal volume of the cavity.

An adjustable helmet having first and second shells and a single actuator comprising at least one tooth, the single actuator being moveable between: a first locked position, wherein the at least one tooth retains the first and second shells and the first and second shells define a first hollow space; a released position, wherein the at least one tooth no longer retains the first and second shells such that one of the first and second shells is moveable relative to the other of the first and second shells; and a second locked position, wherein the at least one tooth retains the first and second shells and the first and second shells define a second hollow space, the second hollow space being different than the first hollow space.

A protective athletic garment comprising a protective cap for protecting a body part of the user. The protective cap comprises a shell for overlying the user's body part. The shell comprises a first shell member and a second shell member. The protective cap comprises a liner mounted under the shell for being disposed between the shell and the user's body part. The protective cap also comprises a link interconnecting the first shell member and the second shell member to hold the first shell member and the second shell member together. The link extends along at least part of a periphery of the first shell member and at least part of a periphery of the second shell member such that the first shell member and the second shell member are movable relative to one another in response to movement of the user's body part.

Protective athletic garment

The invention relates to a leg pad for a hockey player. The leg pad extends along a longitudinal axis and comprises an upper portion, a bottom portion and a band. The upper portion has a knee cap for covering a knee joint of the player. The bottom portion has an upper shell for covering a substantial part of a shin of the hockey player and a lower shell for at least partially covering the shin and ankle of the hockey player. The band extends along part of a periphery of the upper shell and part of a periphery of the lower shell. The band interconnects the upper shell and the lower shell to one another wherein the lower shell is movable relative to the upper shell between a first position and a second position in response to flexion of the ankle.

The present invention covers a hockey helmet for receiving a head of a player. The helmet comprises an outer shell made of first and second materials having respective first and second flexibilities. The outer shell comprises a front portion for at least partially facing the crown region of the head, a top portion for at least partially facing the top region of the head, a back portion for at least partially facing the back region of the head, an occipital portion for at least partially facing the occipital region of the head, and left and right portions for at least partially facing the left and right side regions of the head, the left and right portions comprising respective left and right projections that extend downwardly in front of the respective left and right ears and left and right sections located above and behind the respective left and right ears wherein one of the occipital portion, left and right projections and left and right sections is made of the second material and wherein the second flexibility is greater from the first flexibility.

A method of making an outer shell, the method comprising: (a) providing first and second sheets, each of the first and second sheets being made of a layer of high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane or polycarbonate extruded with a layer of non-woven fabric; (b) providing a third sheet made of high-density polyethylene foam, polypropylene foam, polyurethane foam or polystyrene foam, the third sheet having top and bottom sides; (c) affixing a first layer of adhesive film on the top side of the third sheet; (d) affixing a second layer of adhesive film on the bottom side of the third sheet; (e) placing the third sheet between the first and second sheets such that the first layer of adhesive film of the third sheet contacts the layer of non-woven fabric of the first sheet and the second layer of adhesive film of the third sheet contacts the layer of non-woven fabric of the second sheet; (f) stitching together the first, second and third sheets in order to form a composite sheet; and (g) thermoforming the composite sheet for forming the outer shell wherein the outer shell has a shape suitable for a hockey or lacrosse leg pad, shoulder pads or elbow pad.

The invention provides a face guard for a hockey helmet. The face guard comprises a contour wire and a plurality of wires made of stainless steel. The plurality of wires are arranged as a curved grid having a concave side for facing a face of a wearer, the plurality of wires comprising first, second, third and fourth vertical wires intersecting first and second horizontal wires, each of the first, second, third and fourth vertical wires and first and second horizontal wires having a portion to be at least partially located within a field of view of the eyes of the wearer, each of the first, second, third and fourth vertical wires and first and second horizontal wires having an inner surface facing the face of the wearer and an outer surface opposing the inner surface, wherein the inner surface is mat and the outer surface is shiny. Each of the first, second, third and fourth vertical wires and first and second horizontal wires may have an elliptical cross-section with a major axis and a minor axis, the major axis being oriented to generally converge towards the eyes of the wearer, wherein a ratio of the minor axis to the major axis is between 0.4 and 0.8, and wherein the face guard weighs between 170 grams and 220 grams.

A hockey glove having a thumb member comprising a top layer and a bottom layer affixed together at their respective peripheries for defining a cavity, a thumb pocket for receiving the thumb, and a rigid thumb skeleton enclosed in the cavity, the rigid thumb skeleton comprising a first section for covering at least partially the proximal phalanx of the thumb, a second section for covering at least partially the middle phalanx of the thumb and a third section for covering at least partially the distal phalanx of the thumb, wherein the second section comprises a proximal slot extending between first and second ends and a distal slot extending between first and second ends. The rigid thumb skeleton further comprises a proximal pin passing through the proximal slot of the second section and a distal pin passing through the distal slot of the second section. In use, when the second section pivots relative to the first section towards the closed position, the proximal pin abuts the second end of the proximal slot to prevent overbending of the thumb, and when the third section pivots relative to the second section towards the closed position, the distal pin abuts the first end of the distal slot to prevent overbending of the thumb; and when the second section pivots relative to the first section towards the open position, the proximal pin abuts the first end of the proximal slot to prevent hyperextension of the thumb, and when the third section pivots relative to the second section towards the open position, the distal pin abuts the second end of the distal slot to prevent hyperextension of the thumb.

A face guard for a sports helmet, comprising a plurality of wires arranged as a grid and wherein at least one of the wires has a cross-section with a periphery having a first maximal dimension in a first direction and a second maximal dimension in a second direction intersecting the first direction, the second maximal dimension being less than the first maximal dimension. Each of the at least one of the wires may have an elliptical cross-section with a major axis and a minor axis, wherein a ratio of the minor axis to the major axis may be between 0.2 and 0.9. Each of the at least one of the wires may have a portion to be at least partially located within a field of view of a wearer wearing the face guard.
