A welding method includes: moving a welding head toward a plurality of workpieces, wherein each of the plurality of workpieces includes a polymeric composite, the polymeric composite includes a polymer matrix and a plurality of fibers, and each of the fibers includes a magnetic material; applying a joining pressure to the workpieces with the welding head; applying energy to the plurality of workpieces to melt an interface between the plurality of workpieces, wherein a weld plane is defined at the interface between the plurality of workpieces; and applying a magnetic field to the plurality of workpieces to change an orientation of the plurality of fibers relative to the polymer matrix in the weld area so that the fibers in a weld area are at an angle relative to the weld plane.

Magnetic assisted plastic composite welding for weld line fiber crossover

A method and system for processing an engine block that includes a cylinder liner. The engine block having a first material with different coefficient of thermal expansion than a second material forming the cylinder liner. The method includes providing an insulating barrier to the cylinder liner, and quenching the engine block. The insulating barrier provides a lower cooling rate to the second material forming the cylinder liner than a cooling rate for the first material forming the engine block during the quenching.

Method and system for processing an automotive engine block

A sealing interface configured to prevent galvanic corrosion of a container having parts made of dissimilar materials includes a first part, a second part, and a sealant. The first part has a first sealing surface and a first exterior surface substantially perpendicular to the first sealing surface. The second part has a second sealing surface and a second exterior surface substantially perpendicular to the second sealing surface. One of the parts includes an external sealing chamfer on the respective sealing surface extending to the respective exterior surface. The sealant at least fills a space formed between the external sealing chamfer and the sealing surface of the other of the parts when the parts are connected, forming a barrier between the parts such that the exterior surfaces of the parts are not in contact and are separated by the sealant. The exterior surfaces may be flush when the parts are connected.

A positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system for an engine includes: a PCV tube defining a flowpath extending along an axis; a damage detection circuit associated with the PCV tube. The PCV system also includes a damage detection module that selectively indicates that a fault is present in the PCV tube based on a change in a characteristic of the damage detection circuit and that illuminates a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the fault is present.

Systems and methods for detecting damage in a positive crankcase ventilation tube

A Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) channel disconnect detection device and method is provided for an engine having a crankcase, an intake system for delivering metered air to the engine, and a PCV channel for containing PCV gas flow between the crankcase and the intake system and having a first end and a second end. The PCV channel disconnect detection device includes a detection channel that supplies unmetered air surrounding one of the ends of the PCV channel to a post-throttle portion of the intake system. The detection channel is inoperable in response to a vacuum in the post-throttle portion of the intake system if the PCV channel connection is connected. The detection channel is operable in response to the vacuum in the post-throttle portion of the intake system if the PCV channel is disconnected. The detection channels may be configured to bypass all flow restrictions in the PCV system.

PCV channel disconnect detection device and method

A crankcase ventilation system for an engine that may include a control valve and a disconnect fitting disposed in a conduit between the crankcase and an intake system. The disconnect fitting may include a tube wall, where the inside of the tube wall may have a support. The support may include at least one flow gap, and a plunger opening. The inside of the tube wall may have a plunger seat spaced apart from the support. A plunger may include a stem positioned in the plunger opening, that may be configured to translate in the opening. The plunger may include a head configured to engage the plunger seat to close flow. The conduit may include a segment configured for insertion into the disconnect to engage and unseat the plunger from the plunger seat to open flow.

An engine control system comprises a fuel composition module, a comparison module, and a memory module. The fuel composition module determines a fuel composition and an amount of undesired fuel in the fuel composition. The comparison module compares the amount of undesired fuel to a misfueling threshold. The memory module records a misfueling event based on the comparison.

Method of informing dealer service operation and customer of vehicle misfueling in non-flex fuel vehicles

Antifoam compositions for functional fluids contain antifoam agents comprising perfluoropolyether compounds (PFPE). An automatic transmission fluid is provided containing the antifoam composition in a lubricating base oil, along with conventional additives such as antiwear agents. Automobile transmissions are provided that contain an automatic transmission fluid containing the new antifoam compositions. In a further embodiment, methods are provided for reducing foam in an engine oil or unwanted noise in an automobile transmission during operation, comprising lubricating the engine or transmission with a lubricating fluid containing the antifoam compositions of the invention.

Controlled release of perfluoropolyether antifoam additives from compounded rubber

Antifoam compositions for automatic transmission fluids contain antifoam agents comprising perfluoropolyether compounds (PFPE). An automatic transmission fluid is provided containing the antifoam composition in a lubricating base oil, along with conventional additives such as antiwear agents. Automobile transmissions are provided that contain an automatic transmission fluid containing the new antifoam compositions. In a further embodiment, methods are provided for reducing unwanted noise in an automobile transmission during operation, comprising lubricating the transmission with an ATF containing the antifoam compositions of the invention.

Thermally stable antifoam agent for use in automatic transmission fluids

A rubber composition contains an antifoam compound that leaches out of the rubber composition when placed in contact with a functional fluid. The antifoam compound is delivered into a functional fluid such as an automatic transmission fluid or an engine oil by contacting the functional fluid with the rubber composition. In addition to the antifoam compound, the rubber composition contains one or more elastomers, which may be selected from a wide variety of natural or synthetic rubbers. In a preferred embodiment, the elastomer comprises a high temperature elastomer such as acrylic elastomer and ethylene acrylic elastomer.

Controlled release of antifoam additives from compounded rubber

The method of lost foam casting uses a polystirene foam pattern molded from polystirene beads preexpanded from raw polystirene beads that have a raw bead diameter in the range of about 0.1 to about 0.6 millimeters and that include isopentane as a relatively slow diffusing blowing agent alone, or together with normal pentane as a relatively high diffusing blowing agent, the isopentane being present in an amount of at least about 40% by weight of the total blowing agent of the raw beads to significantly reduce post-molding dimensional pattern shrinkage and to render the molded patterns inherently more dimensionally stable. The patterns can be used directly in the lost foam casting of molten metal without the need for any intermediate pattern dimension-stabilizing treatment.
