A first application client on a first UE served by a first RAN (Radio Access Network) node, and a second application client on a second UE served by a second RAN node connect to a specific application server. The application server requests to establish a connection between the two application clients. The first RAN node identifies the second RAN node serving the second UE and a connection within RAN and passing through the first and the second RAN nodes is established between the first UE and the second UE. Application user data is conveyed between the first application client on the first UE and the second application client on the second UE through the serving RAN nodes. At least one of the two UEs may use a radio interface not allowing wireless communication with another UE. The first and the second RAN nodes may be the same node.

Application layer communications in cellular networks

A radio communication link is established between first and second nodes in a cellular network, which comprise at least channel coding and decoding of first and second Physical (PHY) layers and first and second Medium Access Control (MAC) sublayers. User data is transmitted from the first node to the second node while applying a PHY Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithm in transmission for coding and in reception for decoding by the first and second PHY layers. A value of a PHY-FEC error metric is computed with respect to errors in the user data received by the second node that are uncorrected by the PHY FEC algorithm. The received user data including the uncorrected errors is transferred from the second PHY layer to the second MAC sublayer, subject to the value of the PHY-FEC error metric being less than a threshold used by an error tolerance procedure.

Error metrics for physical layer FEC

A base station is partitioned into a part executed on virtualization platform and a plurality of Radio Transceiver Points (R-TPs). It is established at least one CCord (Central Controller or Central Coordinator) of the base station, connected with the virtualized part of the base station and to the plurality of R-TPs by at least one control logical interface. Communications with the User Equipment (UE) implement a protocol split: on each R-TP, at least MAC (Medium Access Control) functions and a modulation function as part of PHY (Physical Layer) functions and on the virtualization platform at least PDCP (Packed Data Convergence Protocol) functions. CCord collects reports from each R-TP, with respect to usage status of belonging, allocated or assigned resources to each R-TP for downlink or uplink communications, and based on the collected reports selects at least one new serving R-TP of the UE.

Virtualized base station and its controller

A Radio Access Network node implements a radio air interface for delivering communications with User Equipments (UEs). The functions of the RAN node are split between a Central Unit (CU) and Distributed Units (DUs). The CU is disaggregated into a CU-CP (CU-Control Plane) entity and into a first CU-UP (CU-User Plane) entity, both entities being connected to a core network, and into at least one second CU-UP entity, connected to the CU-CP entity and to at least one DU. User data associated with a specific application is transferred between the specific application executed by one or more UEs and a specific application server hosted by a MEC platform, via a given second CU-UP entity, without passing through any core network entity or function. In a claim, the air interface is a cellular base-station-to-device air interface or a cellular device-to-device air interface.

Disaggregated ran architecture for mobile edge computing

A Road Side Unit (RSU) for providing V2X services is partitioned into a Central Unit (RSU-CU) and Distributed Units (RSU-DUs). The RSU communication with User Equipment (UE) carries out via the RSU-DU, while using a cellular technology and implementing at least a Radio Resource Control protocol within the RSU-CU, and implementing at least a Medium Access Control and at least a part of Physical Layer within each RSU-DU. Frequency resources for sidelink operation are conveyed over a logical interface between RSU-CU and RSU-DU. The RSU performs radio communications with the UE in accordance with selected time-frequency resources within the configured frequency resources.

RSU integration in cellular networks

A split of radio protocols is applied within a cellular base station, between at least one virtualization platform connected through user data interfaces to Radio Transceiver Points (R-TP) serving a UE. It is provided a header for transporting a QoS information value, belonging to a set including a delay budget under 50 ms, related to at least one data packet transmitted to the given UE by a specific application. The header and the data packet are tunneled to the R-TP serving the UE. A control interface, conveying QoS requirements of the specific application, is established between a Central Controller or a Central Coordinator of the base station and the serving R-TP. The data packet is transmitted over the air to the given UE, being scheduled while considering the QoS information included within the provided header and the conveyed QoS requirements.

QoS aspects within split base stations

A method for cellular network operation includes establishing communications in a cellular network between a given user equipment (UE) and a base station, comprising a virtualization platform and radio transceiver points (R-TP). A central coordinator selects a downlink coordinated transmission mode involving a first and a second R-TP which receive messages, over a control interface between the virtualization platform and each R-TP, including specifications of time-frequency resources to be used for user data and reference signals transmission. The radio processing functions in the communications with the given UE are performed while executing the selected coordinated mode by both selected R-TPs in accordance with the time-frequency resource specifications.

Virtualization and central coordination in wireless networks

A method for wireless network operation includes, in a cluster of transmitters and receivers in a wireless network, configuring a transmitter of a first node and a transmitter of an interfering node to transmit only in their own dedicated time-frequency partition a signal at a non-zero transmission power, and to transmit a zero power signal in a second time-frequency partition. A receiver of a second node is configured to measure a first received power in a third time-frequency partition dedicated to an interfering transmitter and a second received power in the second time-frequency partition dedicated to receive interference from outside the cluster. A net signal power is determined by subtracting the second received power from the first received power. A coupling loss between the interfering transmitter and the receiver is computed based on the net signal power and the non-zero transmission power.

Coupling loss in wireless networks

A method for cellular network operation includes establishing a transport network communication link in a cellular network between first and second infrastructure cellular entities. A first transport link control function is established within the first infrastructure cellular entity, and a pair transport link control function is established within the second infrastructure cellular entity. Data packets are transmitted through the first and second transport link control functions on the transport network communication link while allocating sequence numbers by the first transport link control function to the transmitted data packets. The pair transport link control function detects, based on the sequence numbers, a loss of a data packet transmitted by the first transport link control function and transmits a status report to the first transport link control function. The forwarding of user traffic from the first infrastructure cellular entity to the second infrastructure cellular entity is controlled responsively to the reports.

Link control in centralized deployments

A method for providing road safety services in a cellular system includes a road safety application forming at least one group including at least one first UE for exchanging information with the road safety application. Road safety information is received in at least one base station or in at least one second UE or in an external processing block connected to the at least one base station or to the at least one second UE and is transmitted to the at least one first UEs within the group. The road safety information is retrieved while using at least one group identifier and a scheduling assignment provided to the at least one first UE by the at least one base station or by the at least one second UE.

Video transmission for road safety applications

A method for communication, includes communicating over the air with a first user equipment (UE) in a frequency domain duplexing (FDD) mode, which defines a downlink channel comprising a first set of time-frequency resources in a first frequency range and an uplink channel comprising a second set of time-frequency resources in a second frequency range, which is disjoint from the first frequency range. An excess capacity is identified in the uplink channel, and at a least a portion of the excess capacity is allocated for downlink communication by assigning a subset of the time-frequency resources in the second frequency range to the downlink communication. The method includes communicating over the air with at least one second UE by transmitting downlink information using concurrently a given subset of the first set of time-frequency resources in the first frequency range and the assigned subset of the time-frequency resources in the second frequency range.

Downlink communication in the uplink FDD channel

A method and apparatus are described, for providing short-range uncompressed video service in a cellular network. The method comprises the steps of: establishing a communication link between at least one local sensor to a base station or to a first user equipment (UE), by using a non-cellular technology; establishing a radio communication channel by using a cellular technology between at least one second user equipment (UE) and the base station or between at least one second UE and the first UE by using a device-to-device (D2D) cellular technology; transmitting over the radio communication channel, uncompressed video data representing at least one area of the video image that was received from the at least one local sensor or control information resulting from processing the received data; and providing the received data or the control information to at least one mobile application residing at the at least one second UE or to at least one control element associated with the at least one second UE.

Transmission of uncompressed video in cellular networks

A method for collaborative resource allocation includes defining a cluster of neighboring base stations () in a cellular network, the cluster including at least first and second base stations. A channel for information exchange is established between the first and second base stations. Messages are transmitted from the first base station to the second base station over the established channel to provide information to the second base station with respect to allocation of first time-frequency resources by the first base station. Second resources are allocated by the second base station responsively to the messages from the first base station.

Collaborative radio resource allocation in cellular deployments

A method for mobile computing includes configuring a group of two or more base stations in a vicinity of a user equipment (UE) in a cellular communication network to serve as a femtocloud in support of application programs running on the UE. A femtocloud control program runs on a platform associated with the network. In response to a request from the UE, an application program is offloaded from the UE for execution by one or more of the base stations in the femtocloud under control of the femtocloud control program. Upon handing over radio communication with the UE from a first base station to a second base station, the execution of the offloaded application is also handed over among the base stations.

Offloading mobile applications to base stations

A method for communication, includes communicating over the air with user equipment (UE) () in a frequency domain duplexing (FDD) mode, which defines a downlink channel comprising a first set of time frequency resources in a first frequency range and an uplink channel comprising a second set of time-frequency resources, comprising multiple physical resource blocks (PRBs) in multiple time periods, in a second frequency range, which has two channel edges and is disjoint from the first frequency range. An excess capacity is identified in the uplink channel, and at a least a portion of the excess capacity is allocated for downlink communication by assigning a subset of the time-frequency resources in the second frequency range to the downlink communication, wherein the subset does not comprise at least the PRBs at both of the channel edges in at least one of the time periods. The method includes communicating over the air with at least one UE by transmitting downlink information using the assigned subset of the time-frequency resources in the second frequency range.
