A cutting tool insert has a cermet body with a Co and/or Ni binder phase and a coating deposited as monolayer or as multiple and/or alternating layers of carbide, nitride or oxide. The coating has a thickness of 21-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a flat rake face, without or with simple chipbreakers and a Co binder phase, or has a thickness of 10-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a rake face land with a width of 100-300 &#x3bc;m with an angle of 10-25&#xb0; to the rake face and a Co and/or Ni binder phase. The cermet body has more than 50 vol. % Ti-based carbonitride and less than 15 wt % and more than 6 wt % Co and/or Ni binder phase and a hardness of &#x3e;1650 HV3. The disclosure also relates to the use of the coated cutting tool insert for the machining of cast iron work pieces.

Coated cermet cutting tool and use thereof

According to the present invention there is now provided a body cemented carbide provided with at least one wear resistant layer, which body contains a toughness increasing surface zone. Increase in toughness is obtained due to the presence of a surface zone having increased WC grain size and/or increased Co content. The invention is most suitable for WC&#x2014;Co cemented carbides.

Cemented carbide body

The present invention relates to a method of machining a metal work piece with a coated cutting tool insert having a cemented carbide body and a coating deposited as monolayer(s) or as multiple and/or alternating layers. The coating has a total thickness of from about 25 to about 75 &#x3bc;m and the machining is performed at a cutting speed of greater than about 600 m/min, preferably from about 800 to about 1500 m/min. The invention also relates to a coated cutting tool useful for such machining operation.

Coated milling insert has a WC&#x2014;Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W-alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNwith columnar grains followed by a layer of &#x3ba;-AlOand a top layer of TiN. Method of making a cemented carbide tool and a cemented tool

A method of making a cemented carbide body having WC with an average grain size of 0.5-4 &mgr;m, 3.5-9 wt % Co and <2 wt % carbides of Ta, Ti and Nb, and with a substoichiometric carbon content, the method including sintering the body such that an eta phase containing structure is obtained with a size of 1-15 &mgr;m and a content of 10 vol. %-35 vol. %, and subjecting the body to recarburization such that the eta phase in a 50-350 &mgr;m wide intermediate zone is transformed to WC&plus;Co without essentially changing its Co-content.

Method of making cemented carbide body

According to the present invention there is now provided a body of cemented carbide provided with at least one wear resistant layer, which body contains a zone in the cemented carbide and adjacent to the applied layer, containing triangular WC platelets with a specific orientation. Different binder phase gradients are possible. The body is in particular suited for application of CVD diamond layers.

Coated cemented carbide cutting tool and method of coating it with diamond

The present invention relates to a coated body such as a cutting tool insert comprising a wear resistant coating and a cemented carbide body particularly useful for the machining of cast iron parts by turning, milling or drilling at high speeds. The cemented carbide body consists of WC, 3.5-9 wt-% Co and <2 wt-% carbides of Ta, Ti and Nb. It has a core containing finely distributed eta phase islands and an intermediate zone 50-250 &mgr;m thick essentially free of eta phase and with nominal Co content whereby the binder phase in the intermediate zone is present as smaller original islands and larger islands transformed from original eta phase. These latter Co-islands therefore have a size and distribution essentially the same as that of the eta phase in the core. There may be present a thin surface zone free of eta phase with a Co content lower than the nominal Co-content.

Coated cutting insert

The present invention relates to coated silicon nitride based cutting tools and a method of making the same. By a carburizing heat treatment prior to the deposition of the coating, an improved bonding strength of the coating is obtained. A continuous or semicontinuous transition zone of 2-10 &mgr;m thickness is formed between the substrate and the inner layer of the coating in which transition zone the glass phase is replaced by the material of the inner layer.

Coated silicon nitride based cutting tools

The present invention relates to a method for sintering of a silicon nitride based material using gas pressure sintering technique. It has been found that using a sintering atmosphere containing nitrogen and 0.1-10 vol-% carbon monoxide a cutting tool material is obtained with improved properties, particularly increased edge toughness, when machining heat resistant alloys.

Method of sintering silicon nitride based materials

A sintered body of titanium-based carbonitride alloy according to the invention comprises carbonitride hard constituents in 5-25% binder phase where the hard constituents contain, in addition to Ti, one or more of the metals Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and/or W and the binder phase is based on cobalt and/or nickel. The sintered body has at least one outer surface with a &lt;50 .mu.m thick surface layer of a titanium-rich cubic carbonitride. Below this layer there is a &lt;100 .mu.m thick binder phase enrichment zone. The binder phase content can be &gt;1.2 of that in the inner part of the body D. Under the binder phase enrichment zone, there is a &lt;250 .mu.m thick binder phase depleted zone C. The binder phase content in this zone has a lowest level &lt;0.9 of the binder phase content in the inner part of the body D. Such sintered bodies are manufactured by heat treatment in an atmosphere of N.sub.2 and/or NH.sub.3 possibly in combination with at least one of CH.sub.4, CO and CO.sub.2 at 1100.degree.-1350.degree. C. for 1-25 hours at atmospheric pressure or higher.
