A method of managing data bearers between a cellular network subscriber device and a packet data gateway in a cellular network core, the cellular network subscriber device and the packet data gateway being connected by a default bearer, the method including receiving at least one dedicated bearer request for a communication session between the cellular network subscriber device and an external network resource; comparing at least one parameter of the received dedicated bearer against a set of predetermined rules; and if at least one parameter of the received dedicated bearer request matches at least one of the set of predetermined rules: storing the at least one parameter of the received dedicated bearer request; and sending a message to the subscriber device to cause the cellular network subscriber device and packet data gateway to use the default bearer for the communication session.

Dedicated bearer management

In a cellular communications network, user equipment connected to a base station, the active mode handover behavior of the base station for selecting handover targets is set to be different from idle mode reselection. The MME provides its eNodeBs with supplemental information about other PLMNs which can be considered for handover in accordance with dynamic criteria such as the time, location, subscriber group, etc to allow dynamic handover to other PLMNs in accordance with the commercial agreements.

Cellular handover

An LTE cellular network having management mobility servers (MMEs), base stations (enodeBs) and mobile user equipment (UE). The network supporting two groups of mobile device subscribers; subscribers of a macrocell network and subscribers of a small cell network. The base stations being configured to broadcast network information and device configuration information to the mobile devices through System Information Block messages. The base stations being configured to selectively send override parameters to subscribers of the mobile devices to alter the idle mode reselection processing to prefer connections to the small cell network.

Cell reselection

A method of managing a data connection between a user device and a network of content caches, the user device and content caches being connectable via a network of gateway servers. The method comprising: in response to a request for content data issued by the user device, receiving content location data stored within at least one content cache from a content locator unit; determining which one of the caches is the closest to the user device; determining whether the packet data connection could be better served using a different gateway server; and if it is determined that a different gateway server should be used, causing the current data connection to move from the current gateway server to the different gateway server.
