The invention directed to a method of reducing the increase in viscosity and the drop in the heat transfer coefficient that commonly occurs with quenching media which is repeatedly circulated through a hot reaction vessel. The method comprises adding a preserving composition to the quenching media. The composition comprises: a) high temperature polymerization inhibitor, b) a tar dispersant, and c) a viscosity reducer. The method allows the quenching media to remain effective longer than would otherwise be the case. By doing so this prevents having to devote excessive resources for such problems as: controlling heat recovery, viscosity increases, product downgrades or having to operate equipment at temperatures beyond their optimum performance designs.

A method of clarifying oily waste water comprising adding to the waste water an effective clarifying amount of one or more demulsifiers selected from the group consisting of dendritic polyamines, dendritic polyamidoamines and hyperbranched polyethyleneimines and the reaction products thereof with gluconolactone, alkylene oxides, salts of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid, alkyl halides, benzyl halides and dialkyl sulfates.

A method is disclosed for mitigating fouling and reducing viscosity in primary fractionators and quench sections of ethylene plants by adding to a hydrocarbon stream a mono and/or a polyalkyl-substituted phenol-formaldehyde resin having a weight average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 30,000 and at least one alkyl substituent containing from about 4 to about 24 carbon atoms, which alkyl substituent may be linear or branched.

Asphaltenes may be dispersed in caustic treated petroleum crude oil, or in any fraction thereof by adding an effective dispersing amount of a mono or di substituted alkylphenol-formaldehyde resin and or a monosubstituted alkylphenol-polyethylenepolyamine-formaldehyde resin, such resins having a weight average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 20,000, and an alkyl substituent containing from about 4 to about 24 carbon atoms, which alkyl substituent may be linear or branched.
