A coated cutting tool is disclosed having a substrate and a coating including an aperiodic, multilayered structure with an average composition of (Ti, Al, Cr, Si)N, wherein the average composition is (TiAlCrSi)N, where 0&#x3c;a&#x3c;0.5, preferably 0.05&#x3c;a&#x3c;0.4 most preferably 0.25&#x3c;a&#x3c;0.3, where 0&#x3c;b&#x3c;0.15, preferably 0.02&#x3c;b&#x3c;0.10, most preferably 0.04&#x3c;b&#x3c;0.08, where 0.01&#x3c;c&#x3c;0.17, preferably 0.02&#x3c;c&#x3c;0.10, most preferably 0.04&#x3c;c&#x3c;0.08, and a+b+c&#x3c;1, and wherein the average thickness of the individual layers is 0.1 to 100 nm.

Multilayered coated cutting tool

The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool wherein a substrate is coated with a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating comprising a laminar, multilayered structure of alternating layers of metalnitrides, metalcarbides or metalcarbonitrides. In the coating the sequence of individual layer thicknesses has no repeat period but is essentially aperiodic throughout the entire multilayered structure. The average chemical composition of the coating was AlTiSiCr(CN) where a is greater than zero and less than about 0.5, preferably a is greater than about 0.05 and less than about 0.4, where b is greater than about 0.1 and less than about 0.9, preferably b is greater than about 0.3 and less than about 0.9, where c is greater than about 0.01 and less than about 0.17, preferably c is greater than about 0.02 and less than about 0.1, where d is greater than or equal to zero and less than about 0.06, and a+b+c+d=1, where e is greater than or equal to zero and less than about 1, preferably e is greater than or equal to zero and than about 0.2.

The present invention relates to a drill comprising a cemented carbide or high speed steel substrate and a coating wherein the coating comprises: a first layer system having a multilayered structure covering substantially the whole active part of the drill, a second layer system having a multilayered structure covering only the tip area of the drill. Drills according to the present invention have good wear resistance and improved properties when reconditioning the drill. The present invention also relates to a method of making a drill according to the present invention.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool comprising a substrate and, a wear resistant coating, said wear resistant coating is composed of one or more layers of refractory compounds of which at least one layer consists of a multilayered MX/LX/MX/LX laminar structure where the alternating layers MX and LX are carbides or nitrides with the elements M and L selected from the group consisting of Ti, Nb, Hf, V, Ta, Mo, Zr, Cr, Al, Si or W and mixtures thereof, wherein the sequence of individual layer thicknesses has no repeat period but essentially aperiodic throughout the entire multilayered structure, and where the individual MX and LX layer thickness is larger than 0.1 ran but the sum of any 10 consecutive layers in the structure is smaller than 300 nm, and the total thickness of said multilayered structure is larger than 0.5 &#x3bc;m but smaller than 20 &#x3bc;m, deposited by PVD-technique, where at least one of MX or LX are electrically isolating, and a method of making such a cutting tool.
