A size composition for the surface sizing of paper, board or other suchlike. The size composition comprises a size fraction which comprises a water-soluble, principal component made up of, for example, starch, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, glucomannan, protein, or mixtures thereof, and a pigment fraction formed by mixing together a mineral material, which in the main comprises talc particles and/or other phyllosilicate particles, and a binder such as a synthetic polymer, latex and/or other corresponding binder. The size composition is prepared by mixing together the said size fraction and pigment fraction.

Method of making a surface size composition

A modified filler used in the making of paper or the like, preparation of the filler and its use. The modified filler comprises a filler known as such, e.g. Calcium carbonate, kaolin, talc, titanium dioxide, sodium silicate and aluminum trihydrate or their mixture, and a hydrophobic polymer made of polymerisable monomers, which is added to the filler as a polymer dispersion or a polymer solution.

A stock size intended to be added as a solution to the pulp stock in connection with the manufacture of paper or board in order to improve the characteristics of the paper or board, e.g.), to reduce the absorption of liquids, to increase the dry strength and wet strength. The stock size contains a polymer, which is based on styrene maleic acid and stabilised with a polysaccharide, such as cationic starch. The stock size is advantageously prepared in a steam jet cooker. The stock size is suitably used as a stock size in the manufacturing of liquid packaging board.

The invention relates to a starch-based polymer dispersion, which contains a copolymer of starch with monomers. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of said dispersion and its use as a surface sizing additive for paper and as a wet- and dry-strengthener for paper which is added to the wet end of the paper machine.
