The compositions include a random copolymer and a radiation additive, wherein the random copolymer includes propylene and less than 2 wt. % ethylene and exhibits a melt flow rate of from about 30 to 100 dg/min., the polymer composition exhibits a flexural modulus of from about 160 kpsi to about 200 kpsi and the polymer composition is adapted to produce a polymer article exhibiting low plate out, a haze at 20 mils of no greater than 15%, radiation stability and autoclavability.

Supported catalyst systems and methods of forming the same are described herein. In one specific embodiment, the methods generally include providing an inorganic support material and contacting the inorganic support material with an aluminum fluoride compound represented by the formula AlFXBto form an aluminum fluoride impregnated support, wherein X is selected from Cl, Br and OH, B is HO, p is selected from 1 to 3 and q is selected from 0 to 6. The method further includes contacting the aluminum fluoride impregnated support with a transition metal compound to form a supported catalyst system, wherein the transition metal compound is represented by the formula [L]M[A]; wherein L is a bulky ligand, A is a leaving group, M is a transition metal and m and n are such that a total ligand valency corresponds to the transition metal valency.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a transition metal olefin polymerization catalyst component characterized by the formula: where, M is a Group IV or a Group IV transition metal, B is a bridge group containing at least two carbon atoms, A' and A&#x2033; are organogroups, each containing a heteroatom selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus, X is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, a C-Calkyl group, a C-Caromatic group and mixtures thereof, and n is 1, 2 or 3. The invention also encompasses a method for the polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer which comprises contacting a transition metal catalyst component as characterized by formula (1) above and an activating co-catalyst component in a polymerization reaction zone with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer under polymerization conditions to produce a polymer product.

Tridentate metal catalyst for olefin polymerization

Supported stereospecific catalysts and processes for the stereotactic propagation of a polymer chain derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain three or more carbon atoms or which are substituted vinyl compounds, specifically alpha olefins, particularly the polymerization of propylene to produce syndiotactic or isotactic polypropylene. The supported metallocene catalyst comprises a stereospecific metallocene catalyst and a co-catalyst component comprising at least one of an alkyl alumoxane and an alkylaluminum compound. Both the metallocene catalyst and the co-catalyst are supported on a particulate silica support comprising silica particles having an average particle size of 5-40 microns and an average effective pore size of 50-200 angstroms. The silica support further has a differential pore size distribution of a pore volume of at least 0.01 cm/g. within a range having a maximum pore width of no more than 300 angstroms. The metallocene has a retention factor on this support of at least 90 wt. % after aging in tri-isobutylaluminum at a temperature of 25&#xb0; C. for a period of 12 hours.

Supported metallocene catalysts and their use in producing stereospecific polymers

The catalyst systems generally are compounds having the general formula: where R, R, Rand Rare optional and independently selected from hydrogen, Cto Calkyl groups or Cto Caryl groups, A' and A&#x2033; are independently selected from coordination groups, M is a Group 4 or 5 transition metal, X is selected from halogens, alkyl groups, aromatic groups or combinations thereof and n is less than 4.

Bidentate catalyst for olefin polymerization, methods of forming such and products therefrom

Both the metallocene catalyst and the co-catalyst are supported on a particulate silica support comprising silica particles having an average particle size of 5&#x2013;40 microns and an average effective pore size of 50&#x2013;200 angstroms. The silica support further has a differential pore size distribution of a pore volume of at least 0.01 cm/g. within a range having a maximum pore width of no more than 300 angstroms. A process for the preparation of a pyridinyl-linked bis-amino ligand that comprises, (a) reacting 2,6-dibromophenyl amine with an arylboronic acid component which is substituted or unsubstituted to produce a 2,6-diarylphenyl amine which is substituted or unsubstituted; (b) reacting the 2,6-diarylphenyl amine with a 2,6-dialkanoic pyridine characterized by the formula: wherein R' and R&#x2033; are each independently a C&#x2013;Chydrocarbyl group; to produce a mono-imine ligand characterized by the formula: wherein TRP is a terphenyl group which is substituted or unsubstituted; and (c) reacting the mono-imine ligand with an aniline which may be substituted or unsubstituted to produce a bis-amine ligand characterized by the structure: wherein: TRP is a substituted or unsubstituted terphenyl group; and AR is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group.

Catalyst components, process for their preparation and their use as catalyst components in polymerization of olefins

Ethylene polymerization processes employing bis-imino pyridinyl transition metal components which exhibit C2, C2v or Cs symmetry. Catalyst components of the same or different symmetries may be employed to control polymerization characteristics and characteristics of the resulting polymer products such as polymer yield and polymer molecular weight. The transition metal catalyst component is characterized by the formula: wherein M is a Group 4&#x2013;11 transition metal, n is an integer within the range of 1&#x2013;3, Q is a halogen or a C&#x2013;Calkyl group, and PY is a pyridinyl group which is coordinated with M through the nitrogen atom of the pyridinyl group. Further, with respect to formula (I), A is a methyl group, a phenyl group, or a substituted phenyl group and Band Bare the same or different aromatic groups depending on the symmetry of the catalyst component. The catalyst component and an activating co-catalyst component are contacted with ethylene in a polymerization reaction zone which is free of hydrogen or contains hydrogen in an amount which is less than 5 mole % of the ethylene under polymerization conditions to produce a polymer product which can be a ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and Calpha olefin, specifically an ethylene-propylene copolymer.

Ethylene polymerization employing bis-imino pyridinyl transition metal catalyst components

Catalyst structure for olefin polymerization

Supported stereospecific catalysts and processes for the stereotactic propagation of a polymer chain derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain three or more carbon atoms or which are substituted vinyl compounds, such as styrene and vinyl chloride. One application is the stereospecific propagation of C-Calpha olefins, particularly the polymerization of propylene to produce syndiotactic polypropylene over a supported metallocene catalyst comprising a stereospecific metallocene catalyst component incorporating a metallocene ligand structure having two sterically dissimilar cyclopentadienyl ring structures coordinated with the central transition metal atom. Both of the cyclopentadienyl groups are in a relationship with one another by virtue of bridge or substituent groups, which provide a stereorigid relationship relative to the coordinating transition metal atom to prevent rotation of said ring structures. The metallocene catalyst component and a co-catalyst component, an alumoxane or an alkyl aluminum, are supported on a particulate silica support comprising spheroidal silica particles having an average diameter within the range of 5-40 microns and an average effective pore size within the range of 50-350 angstroms. The particulate silica support contains at least 50 wt. % of the supported catalyst component within the pore volume of the silica support.

Process for producing stereospecific polymers

Process of preparing silica-supported catalysts. A support material comprising silica particles impregnated with an alumoxane co-catalyst with at least one-half of the co-catalyst disposed within the internal pore volume of the silica is contacted with a dispersion of a metallocene catalyst in an aromatic solvent. The dispersion and support are mixed at a temperature of about 10&deg; C. or less to enable the metallocene to become reactively supported on and impregnated within the alumoxane-impregnated silica particles. The supported catalyst is recovered from the aromatic solvent and washed with an aromatic hydrocarbon and then a paraffinic hydrocarbon at a temperature of about 10&deg; C. or less. The washed catalyst is dispersed in a viscous mineral oil.
