An inflatable cushion and method of making an inflatable cushion for deployment along an interior side of a vehicle, comprising: a first inflatable portion having an opening providing fluid communication into a low permeable inflation chamber of the first inflatable portion; a second inflatable portion having an opening providing fluid communication into a low permeable inflation chamber of the second inflatable portion; a fluid dispersing conduit being in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion, the fluid dispersing conduit comprising an inlet opening configured to receive an inflation force for inflating the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion, wherein the fluid dispersing conduit traverses a gap between the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion; and a non-inflatable member disposed in the gap between the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion, wherein the non-inflatable member reduces the required size of the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion.

Side airbag and method of manufacture

An inflatable curtain structure for deployment within the interior of a transportation vehicle so as to cover an area adjacent to an occupant within the vehicle during a collision event. The curtain structure includes an impact surface facing towards the occupant upon inflation of the curtain structure and a rear surface facing away from the occupant upon inflation of the curtain structure. The impact surface and the rear surface are secured relative to one another such that inflation gas entering the curtain structure is substantially confined in the space between the impact surface and the rear surface. The curtain structure includes a lower edge wherein regions of substantially noninflatable character extend adjacent to said lower edge and wherein a plurality of intermittently arranged gas receiving elements of relatively low volume extend towards the lower edge between regions of substantially noninflatable character such that upon inflation of the curtain structure, a portion of the inflation gas entering the cushion structure is conveyed into the gas receiving elements thereby inflating the gas receiving elements and increasing the stiffness adjacent the lower edge of the curtain structure.

Low volume roof rail air bag

A supplemental restraint assembly for a vehicle having a side impact air bag with an interwoven self-tensioning tether/lace. A side air bag is secured to the vehicle roof rail between the front and rear pillars. A tether/lace extends between and is secured to the front and rear pillars. The tether/lace is secured to the air bag and traverses a plurality of spaced-apart guides formed at discrete points along the air bag. When the side impact air bag is inflated the distance between the guides increases thereby taking up slack in the tether/lace thereby inducing tension therein. The air bag is thus held firmly in place when inflated and allows the tether/lace to be stored up through the pillars and along the roof rail in a non-deployed stored state.

Supplemental restraint assembly for an automotive vehicle

An air bag module includes an inflator and an air bag for inflation upon the discharge of gas by the inflator. The module further includes a mounting and diffuser bracket for securing the inflator and air bag to the vehicle. The mounting and diffuser bracket includes a diffuser portion positioned radially outward of the discharge end of the inflator. The diffuser portion preferably includes wing portions substantially surrounding the discharge ports of the inflator such that upon discharge of gas by the inflator, the wing portions redirect and diffuse the discharging inflator gas into the air bag. Advantageously, the wing portions also provide a localized heat shield for the air bag.

Air bag module with mounting and diffuser bracket

An air bag module in a vehicle includes an inflator for generating gas to inflate an air bag. The air bag has a first portion adjacent the inflator and operatively connected to the inflator for receiving the inflator gas therein. The air bag has a second portion extending from the first portion and spaced apart from the inflator by the first portion. The second portion is unidirectionally rolled to define a rolled portion. Prior to air bag inflation, the first portion is stored atop the inflator and the rolled portion is stored atop the first portion. Preferably, the rolled second portion forms a pinch point between the first portion and the second portion such that the first portion partially inflates prior to unrolling of the second portion. Preferably, the first portion is folded in manner to inflate more readily than the rolled second portion such that the first portion inflates and forces the rolled second portion outwardly away from the inflator prior to unfolding of the rolled second portion.

Air Bag Fold And Method

An air bag module includes an inflator for generating gas and an air bag deployable upon generation of gas by the inflator. The module further includes a container for housing the air bag and inflator therein. Preferably, the container is integrally molded as one piece and includes at least two spaced apart integral living hinges. Preferably, the container has a clamshell construction including a first half and a second half pivotally connected to each other by a closure hinge portion. The container preferably includes deployment end portions opposite the closure hinge portion which are releasably connected to each other. Preferably, at least one of the deployment end portions is pivotally connected to the container.

Air bag module

An air bag module includes an inflator for generating gas and an air bag deployable upon generation of gas by the inflator. The air bag module further includes a canister for housing the inflator and a clamshell cover for housing the air bag. The clamshell cover is attached to the canister. Preferably, the clamshell cover includes first and second halves and a bendable thin hinge portion pivotally connecting the first and second halves. Upon air bag deployment, the air bag breaks open and deploys out through the hinge portion of the clamshell cover.

An air bag module is provided in a vehicle having a vertical vehicle axis and having a horizontal vehicle axis. The air bag module includes an inflator having an elongated vertical inflator axis. The inflator discharges inflator gas which is directed in a longitudinal direction perpendicular to the vertical inflator axis. An air bag includes a main body portion having a shape that is angled with respect to the longitudinal direction. Preferably, the longitudinal direction is angled upwardly relative the horizontal vehicle axis and the main body portion of the air bag is angled downwardly relative the longitudinal direction. Preferably, the main body portion includes upper and lower downwardly angled edges which are generally parallel to the horizontal vehicle direction when the air bag is inflated.

An inflatable restraint cushion for restraining a vehicle occupant is used in a vehicle having a vehicle side structure including a door having a beltline portion defining a lower boundary of a side window opening. The cushion includes an inboard contact face for inflation adjacent the vehicle occupant and an opposite outboard contact face for inflation adjacent the vehicle door. The outboard contact face includes a generally horizontally extending beltline notch portion shaped for matably aligning with and engaging the beltline portion of the door when the cushion is inflated. Upon engagement of the cushion by the occupant, the beltline notch portion of the cushion reacts against and is laterally and vertically supported by the beltline portion of the door to provide lateral stability to the cushion.
