A method of fabricating a substrate includes providing a substrate having a flat surface and a beam writing system operable to write in a first direction and a second direction, wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction, The method further includes providing a diffraction grating layout pattern having a first diffraction grating, a second diffraction grating, and a third diffraction grating. The method also includes locating the substrate in the beam writing system, whereby the beam writing system is operable to write into the flat surface, and aligning one of the first, second, and third diffraction gratings parallel with the beam writing system first direction. Additionally, the method includes writing the diffraction grating layout pattern into the substrate flat surface via the beam writing machine.

An imaging apparatus includes an in-coupling diffractive optic directs image-bearing light beams into a planar waveguide, an out-coupling diffractive optic directs the image-bearing light beams from the waveguide toward a viewer eyebox, and a turning diffractive optic directs the image-bearing light beams along the waveguide between the in-coupling and out-coupling diffractive optics. The grating vectors of the in-coupling and out-coupling diffractive optics differ in magnitude and orientation while the grating vectors of all three diffractive optics sum to substantially zero. The turning diffractive optic is further arranged to preserve a desired angular relationship of the propagating image bearing beams within the waveguide.

An image light guide for conveying a virtual image, including a waveguide, an in-coupling diffractive optic operable to direct image-bearing light beams into the waveguide, and an out-coupling diffractive optic operable to direct the image-bearing light beams from the waveguide toward an eyebox. The out-coupling diffractive optic having two or more zones each including a set of diffractive features, wherein successive zones along one dimension of the out-coupling diffractive optic have different respective sets of diffractive features, wherein the diffractive features are operable to direct image-bearing light beams of a first pixel incident upon the diffractive features at a first angle whereby the directed image-bearing light beams of the first pixel further propagate within the waveguide, and wherein the diffractive features are operable to out-couple a portion of the image-bearing light beams of the first pixel incident upon the diffractive features at a second angle.

An implantable apparatus for physiological measurement in a host organism has an implantable sample chamber having a measurement port and live cells that are treated to fluoresce in response to light having an excitation wavelength. An optical sensor housing implanted within the host organism has a window to convey excitation light output and receive fluorescent light; a coupling that couples the measurement port of the sample chamber to the window; an optical chamber partitioned into an excitation sub-chamber and a detection sub-chamber, wherein both sub-chambers are in optical communication with the window; an excitation source energizable to direct excitation light through the excitation sub-chamber and to the window; and a detector in the path of fluorescent light received from the live cells. A signal processing apparatus is energizable to acquire and process a detector signal and to transmit a processed signal that is indicative of fluorescent light energy.

Implantable apparatus for sensing biologic signals

An imaging apparatus for forming dual virtual images includes a planar waveguide, an in-coupling diffractive optic that directs a set of image-bearing light beams into the waveguide, and an out-coupling diffractive optic that directs the set of image-bearing light beams from the waveguide toward a viewer eyebox. The out-coupling diffractive optic includes an array of contiguous diffractive zones, each of which has a set of diffractive features having at least one of a common orientation and a common pitch. A succession of the zones along one dimension of the array have respective sets of diffractive features that progressively vary in at least one of orientation and pitch in a stepwise manner. The out-coupling diffractive optic is arranged together with the array of contiguous diffractive zones for forming a virtual image that is viewable from the eyebox at a near focus distance.

A terahertz (THz) imaging device includes a tunable filter and a focal plane array (FPA) for receiving selected optical wavelengths of light. The tunable filter includes: (a) a first mirror comprised of a thick silicon substrate and a thin silicon membrane, in which the thin silicon membrane is separated from the thick silicon substrate by a gridded cell structure, (b) a second mirror comprised of a thick silicon substrate and a thin silicon membrane, in which the thin silicon membrane is separated from the thick silicon substrate by another gridded cell structure, and (c) a variable gap disposed between the first and second mirrors. The gridded cell structure may have a hexagonal shape, a square shape, a rectangular shape, a triangular shape or a rhombus-like shape.

One or more laser sources that provide an illumination beam having a first polarization transmission axis. An imaging modulator () in the path of the illumination beam is actuable to direct the modulated light toward a projection lens. A laser blanking apparatus in the path of the modulated light is disposed to block transient light between image frames and has at least one analyzer () having a second polarization transmission axis that is orthogonal to the first polarization transmission axis and at least one light polarization modulator that is synchronously timed to rotate polarization of transient light during an interval between frames.

A display apparatus includes one or more imaging channels, each imaging channel includes a polarized light source and a spatial light modulator that is actuable to modulate the polarized light and provide a modulated polarized light. A control logic processor is disposed to receive and analyze each frame of image data for the one or more imaging channels. A variable brightness attenuator in the path of the modulated polarized light and actuable under the control of the control logic processor to attenuate the modulated polarized light to one of a plurality of attenuation levels for the one or more imaging channels according to each frame of image data.

A method for forming, onto a linear array light modulator, a line of illumination that extends in a linear direction, the method includes forming a first linear beam array and a second linear beam array, both linear beam arrays comprising a plurality of laser beams; forming a mixed illumination by aligning the first linear beam array and the second linear beam array in the linear direction and directing the first and second linear beam arrays along a propagation path; magnifying the mixed illumination from the propagation path in the linear direction and relaying the magnified mixed illumination toward the linear array light modulator; and focusing the mixed illumination in the cross-array direction that is orthogonal to the linear direction onto the linear array light modulator.

A method for improving image contrast for a display apparatus obtains a frame of image data having one or more code values for each pixel in the frame of image data, analyzes the frame of image data to identify a distribution of dark regions therein. The method further adjusts at least one of the one or more code values for the frame of image data according to the distribution of dark regions in the frame of image data and attenuates a brightness level available for the image frame according to the distribution of dark regions in the frame of image data.

A method of determining a prothrombin time is disclosed. A mediator is applied to a stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is penetrated to allow the mediator to enter a region containing interstitial fluid and interact with at least one capillary, causing blood and/or blood components to leak from the at least one capillary into the region containing interstitial fluid. A characteristic affected by the blood and/or blood components is measured in the region containing interstitial fluid which correlates to the prothrombin time. A system for measuring prothrombin time is also disclosed. The system has a mediator, one or more microneedles, and a processor directly or indirectly coupled to the one or more microneedles and configured to determine a coagulation change in blood or blood components in a region around the one or more microneedles after the one or more microneedles penetrate a stratum corneum.

An illumination apparatus forms, onto a linear array light modulator, a line of illumination that extends in a linear direction. The illumination apparatus has a first laser array with laser emitters for forming a first linear beam array and a second laser array with laser emitters for forming a second linear beam array. An array combiner aligns at least the first and second linear beam arrays in the linear direction and directs the first and second linear beam arrays along a propagation path to form a mixed illumination. At least first and second cylindrical lens elements having power in the linear direction relay the mixed illumination from the propagation path toward the linear array light modulator. At least third and fourth cylindrical lens elements having power in the cross-array direction that is orthogonal to the linear direction focus the mixed illumination onto the linear array light modulator.

A microshutter array has a frame having a light transmissive portion. Linear microshutter elements extend across the light transmissive portion and in parallel to each other. Each microshutter element has a flat blade extended in a length direction and first and second torsion arms extending outwards from each side of the blade in the length direction, the blade extending across the light transmissive portion. A control circuit provides a separately-controlled and independent voltage that is applied to each of the linear microshutter elements. A controller sets the respective voltages applied to each of the linear microshutter elements.

A method for forming a stereoscopic image forms separate left-eye and right-eye images in a repeated cycle that forms the left-eye image by providing data for lines of the left-eye image, ordered in sequence from a first to a second edge of an image frame, then forms successive lines of modulated light according to the ordered sequence by progressively scanning lines of modulated light across a display surface by rotating a scanning element forward from a first to a second position. The right-eye image is formed by providing data for lines of the right-eye image, ordered in sequence from the second to the first edge of the image frame and forming successive lines of modulated light, progressively scanning the lines of modulated light across the display surface by rotating the scanning element in reverse from the second to the first position. The left-eye image is distinguished from the right-eye image.
