This document describes systems and techniques directed at mitigating display diffraction flares for under-display sensing. In aspects, an equation may be derived that models the effects of a display in producing a diffraction phenomenon at an image plane of a sensing region for an under-display light-sensing device. The equation may be used to determine an arrangement (e.g., an optimized arrangement) of components (e.g., sub-pixels) within the display that minimizes a diffraction efficiency for at least one diffraction order and, thereby, mitigates an intensity and/or a prevalence of optical artifacts in light-sensing data. In implementations, an image intensity point-spread-function is utilized to calculate diffraction efficiencies for respective diffraction orders (e.g., the lowest diffraction orders, the diffraction orders with the greatest brightness).

Mitigating display diffraction flares for under-display sensing

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for under-display fingerprint sensor timing control are disclosed. A method includes receiving, by fingerprint sensor control circuitry, an indication to activate a fingerprint sensor that is located under a display panel of a computing device, the fingerprint sensor attached with respect to the display panel such that the fingerprint sensor is exposed to light produced by the display panel and reflected off a finger placed over the display panel at a location of the fingerprint sensor; outputting, for receipt by the fingerprint sensor, a start-sensing trigger signal at a start time synchronized with a display panel timing signal that is provided to the display panel to control emission of the display panel; and outputting, for receipt by the fingerprint sensor, a stop-sensing trigger signal at a stop time synchronized with the display panel timing signal.

Systems and methods for optical imaging are disclosed. An optical sensor for imaging a biometric input object on a sensing region includes a transparent layer having a first side and a second side opposite the first side; a set of apertures disposed above the first side of the transparent layer; a first set of reflective surfaces disposed below the second side of the transparent layer configured to receive light transmitted through the first set of apertures and to reflect the received light; a second set of reflective surfaces disposed above the first side of the transparent layer configured to receive the light reflected from the first set of reflective surfaces and to further reflect the light; and a plurality of detector elements positioned to receive the further reflected light from the second set of reflective surfaces.

Systems and methods for optical imaging are disclosed. An optical sensor includes: an image sensor array comprising a plurality of pixels; and a collimator filter disposed above the image sensor array, the collimator filter comprising a plurality of light collimating apertures and light blocking material, wherein multiple light collimating apertures of the plurality of light collimating apertures are disposed within a photosensitive area of one of the pixels in the plurality of pixels, and wherein the multiple light collimating apertures are disposed over different portions of the photosensitive area of the one of the pixels.

A device comprises a first camera, wherein the first camera includes one or more photosensors configured to detect visible light passing, in a first direction, through a first surface. The device further includes a light source configured to emit infrared (IR) light, in a second direction opposite the first direction, through the first surface. Disclosed is a device comprising: a light guide configured to receive incident light from one or more light sources; a cover layer with a sensing surface configured to receive an input object to be sensed; and a set of photodetectors. The light guide includes diffraction gratings configured to diffract the incident light as diffracted light, wherein the diffracted light exits the light guide and travels towards the sensing surface. The diffracted light is reflected from the sensing surface as reflected light. The reflected light is sensed by the set of photodetectors to form an image of the input object.

Systems and methods for optical imaging based on diffraction gratings

Systems and methods for optical imaging using an optical sensor in an active area of the display are described. The optical sensor includes a set of detector elements positioned in a detector plane; a transparent layer; and a set of first reflective surfaces in the transparent layer. Each reflective surface in the first set of reflective surfaces is positioned to receive light from a portion of a sensing region of the display and to reflect the received light. The optical sensor further includes a second set of reflective surfaces, each reflective surface in the second set of reflective surfaces is positioned to receive the transmitted light from the first set of reflective surfaces, and to further reflect the received light towards one of the set of detector elements.

Disclosed is a device for optical sensing, comprising: a display comprising a transparent substrate and a plurality of light emitters disposed above the transparent substrate; a transparent cover layer disposed above the display, wherein a top surface of the transparent cover layer provides an input surface for sensing an input object; and, an angled filter disposed below the transparent substrate of the display, wherein the angled filter is configured to allow light within a tolerance angle of an acceptance angle to pass through the angled filter, wherein the acceptance angle is centered around a non-zero angle relative to a normal of the input surface.

An input device includes a transparent layer having a top surface and a bottom surface, and an inner layer positioned below and directly contacting the bottom surface of the transparent layer, wherein the inner layer has a second index of refraction (n) that is lower than a first index of refraction (n) of the transparent layer, and wherein a first region of the transparent layer extends past an end of the inner layer. The device also includes a light source positioned below the bottom surface of the transparent layer, and a reflector arrangement configured to reflect light emitted by the light source into the transparent layer in or proximal to the first region of the transparent layer, wherein at least a portion of the light reflected into the transparent layer propagates within the transparent layer by total internal reflection.

An optical sensor system includes a display substrate, display pixel circuitry including a plurality of light emitting display elements or pixels disposed over the display substrate, a first circular polarizer disposed over the display substrate and the display pixel circuitry, and a transparent cover sheet disposed over the first circular polarizer. A top surface of the transparent cover sheet provides a sensing surface for an object such as a finger. The optical sensor system also includes a sensor layer disposed below the display substrate, the sensor layer having a plurality of photosensors, and a second circular polarizer disposed between the sensor layer and the display substrate.

Systems and methods for reducing unwanted reflections in display systems incorporating an under display biometric sensor

An optical sensor for imaging an input object, such as a fingerprint, on a sensing region of a display is disclosed. The sensor includes a transparent substrate having a first side and a second side opposite the first side. An array of detector elements is positioned above the first side of the transparent substrate and an angle limiting reflector is positioned below the second side of the transparent substrate. The angle limiting reflector is configured to reflect light incident on the angle limiting reflector within a limited acceptance angle towards the array detector elements.
