The resistant to biological degradation of composite wood products is improved by applying a suitable aqueous dispersion of zinc borate onto the fibers to uniformly distribute and to adhere the zinc borate to the strands of the wood composite, applying a suitable adhesive to the wood strands, forming a strand lay-up and consolidating a lay-up under heat and pressure to form a consolidated product with zinc borate uniformly distributed therethrough.

Composite products

A fiber-cement trim board is formed by a fiber-cement core layer faced with a pair of fiber-cement surface layers of substantially equal thickness in the core layer and have a cement-to-wood ratio by weight of between 2 and 3.5 and at least 70% of the wood strands have a length longer than 10 min. Each of the surface layers is formed of a fiber-cement mixture containing wood strands, at least 80% of which have a length of less than 4 mm and a cement-to-wood ratio by weight of between 2 and 3.5. The board is covered at least on the two main faces by a water barrier coating.

Trim board

A composite wood product made from discrete wood particles secured together by a cured bisphenol A formaldehyde resin cured from an A-stage bisphenol A formaldehyde resin having an A-stage bisphenol A to formaldehyde mole ratio of 1 to between 2.5 and 4 and between 3 and 11% of caustic measured as sodium hydroxide based on the weight of resin solids. Preferably the resin will include 2 to 10% urea based on the resin solids. The cured bisphenol A formaldehyde resin secures the wood particles together to form a composite wood product having light colored glue lines that substantially corresponds in color with the wood so that the glue lines tend to be unnoticeable.

A wood product is protectively coated while maintaining the appearance of wood without discoloration by applying to the surface of a dry wood member a sealer coating containing a cyclic epoxy and an anhydride and curing the sealer, while reacting, at least a portion of the epoxy with lignin in the wood and at least a portion of the anhydride with cellulose and lignin in the wood, to bind the sealer to the wood, and cross linking cellulose, followed by applying a protective coating over the sealer before the sealer has been cured completely to bind the protective coating to the sealer. The protective coating provides a barrier to UV penetration and increases the durability of the surface.

Method of protecting wood surfaces and a wood product produced thereby

A method of making a borate treated wood particle board by applying an adhesive resin and a particulate borate treating agent (anhydrous borax or zinc borate) in a dry form to the wood particles to produce treated wood particles (wafers). The treated wood particles are formed into a mat and consolidated under heat and pressure to distribute the resin in the wood before the viscosity of the resin is effected by contact with a sufficient amount of borate to significantly impair penetration of the resin into the wood.
