Described here are systems and method for using ultrasound to localize a medical device to which an active ultrasound element that can transmits ultrasound energy is attached. Doppler signal data of the medical device are acquired while the active element is transmitting acoustic energy, and the Doppler signal data are processed to detect symmetric Doppler shifts associated with the active element. The systems and methods described in the present disclosure enable tracking and display of one or more locations on or associated with the medical device.

Systems and methods for navigating a catheter and delivering a needle to a desired anatomic location are provided. The system includes an injection catheter that includes a needle slidably exposed from, or retracted into, the catheter lumen. The system further includes a first acoustic marker located at a distal end of the catheter and configured to generate an acoustic signal, and a second acoustic marker located at the distal end of the retractable needle and configured to generate an acoustic signal. The acoustic markers allow, in conjunction with a Doppler ultrasound imaging system, identification and navigation of an injection catheter and delivering a needle to a desired anatomic target location.

Heart diseases are detected by producing a series of ultrasound images that depict the blood flow pattern in the left ventricle at successive phases of the cardiac cycle. The blood flow pattern images are produced by injecting a diluted contrast agent and tracking the contrast agent particles as they flow through the left ventricle by acquiring ultrasound images at a high frame rate.

A trainable, adaptable system for analyzing functional or structural clinical data can be used to identify a given pathology based on functional data. The system includes a signal processor that receives functional data from a device monitoring a subject and normalizes the functional data over at least one cycle of functional data. The system also includes a neural network having a plurality of weights selected based on predetermined data and receiving and processing the normalized functional data based on the plurality of weights to generate at least one metric indicating a degree of relation between the normalized functional data to the predetermined data. A diagnostic interpretation module is included for receiving the at least one metric from the neural network and classifying the functional data as indicative of the given pathology or not indicative of the given pathology based on a comparison of the at least one metric to at least one probability distribution of a likelihood of the given pathology.

Trainable diagnostic system and method of use

This disclosure describes methods for detecting early stages of disease, in particular carpal tunnel syndrome, by using cooperative ultrasound techniques. In a particular embodiment, a grayscale ultrasonogram may be used to detect local anatomical features within the carpal tunnel by physically moving a tendon and identifying the corresponding feature on the ultrasonogram display device. A high-resolution color Doppler ultrasound device may then be used to interrogate features of anatomy surrounding the tendon for disease. In a particular embodiment, the color Doppler ultrasound device may be used to measure the velocities of the tendon and surrounding anatomy, in particular the sub-synovial connective tissue; the resultant data may be used to quantify certain anatomical anomalies, indicative or non-indicative of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Doppler ultrasound for identifying material properties of a carpal tunnel anatomy

A method for detecting the presence of contrast agent in the body of the patient initially transmits ultrasound pulses along respective acoustic scan lines, which pulses exhibit a fundamental transmission frequency. A set of returned signals are received along a respective scan line after each pulse transmission. The return signals are mathematically reconstructed to provide a first spectral component around the fundamental frequency and a second spectral component around a harmonic frequency. The peak amplitude of the reconstructed spectral components are compared to determine whether a contrast agent is present in the tissue, and hence to differentiate myocardium and perfused myocardium.

Method and apparatus for recovery and parametric display of contrast agents in ultrasound imaging

An ultrasonic transducer acquires a series of ultrasound tomograms as it continuously rotates through a range of angles. When positioned in a left ventricular long axis view, serial sectional slices are acquired within 6 seconds from which a 3D image is reconstructed. The boundary of the left ventricle is identified in this 3D image using a reference database produced by a learning process that captures expert knowledge of left ventricle cavity shapes.
