A visualization combination engine may be used to combine a first data visualization based on a first data set with a second data visualization based on a second data set. The combination process may be initiated by, for example, clicking and dragging the first data visualization onto the second data visualization. The visualization combination engine may create the combined data visualization without requiring the user to manually combine the first and second data sets. The combination may be carried out by identifying a key that is common between the two data sets and combining the first and second data sets into a combined data set based on the key, and then creating the combined data visualization based on the combined data set. One or more cues may be used during the process to provide helpful information and/or allow user selection of the properties of the combined data visualization.

Automated combination of multiple data visualizations

A data analysis system may automatically suggest data visualizations to a user. A primary data visualization may be displayed to graphically illustrate a primary data set of a database. Criteria may be automatically applied to the database to identify a secondary data set that meets the criteria. A secondary data visualization that graphically illustrates the secondary data visualization and/or a corresponding indicator may be displayed. Multiple visualizations and/or indicators may be displayed, and the user may select one for viewing. The criteria may again be applied to the database to identify a tertiary data set. An analysis path may be recorded to enable the user to easily view the decisions made and/or the data visualizations viewed. The criteria may include determination that the secondary data set has the desired amount of data, has unique data types or descriptors, includes data previously selected by the user, or the like.

A system and method for ensuring that a web browser displays the highest ranked image format possible for an image is provided. In response to a request from a web browser for a dynamic web page, computer-executable code is integrated with the dynamic web page. The computer-executable code is programmed to determine web browser configuration information and request an image according to a set of image formats which are ranked according to ranking criteria and the web browser configuration information. The modified dynamic web page is sent to the web browser. A request for an image is received from the web browser which executes the computer-executable code. The image request identifies the image format for the image selected. The requested image is generated according to the indicated image format and sent to the web browser for display.

A system and method for dynamically generating a textual description for a visual data representation is provided. The method accesses a data set and visual template associated with a visual data representation. A textual description template is also accessed. The visual template is interpreted using the textual description template and data from the data set. As the visual template is interpreted, a textual description is generated corresponding to the visual data representation. The system and method may be initiated by a user request or a command based on some other event such as the passage of time, a change to data in the data set, or the like. The textual description may be generated dynamically in response to a request or previous to, and in anticipation of, a request from a user.
