The present invention provides a new and unique method and apparatus for a new data speed switching scheme for a wired data interface. The method features receiving high-speed serial data over a physical link using a first coding scheme in a receiver; receiving a transmission mode change signal transmitted with sequential information about a change in a data transmission mode of the receiver using a second coding scheme and switching the data transmission mode of the receiver in response thereto. The data transmission modes may include at least one low-power mode where no data transmission is possible and the receiver is powered down. The at least one low-power mode may include two different power down states, each having different wake-up times. The data transmission modes may also include at least one high speed mode where data transmission is possible and the receiver is on. The at least one high speed mode may include several high speed modes, each having different data transmission rates.

The present invention provides an electronic device comprising two or more housing parts which are movable in relation to each other with an optical arrangement enabling optical data communication between electronic components located in the housing parts. The device according to the invention comprises a first housing part comprising first electronic components, a second housing part comprising second electronic components, wherein said first housing part and said second housing part are movably connected and capable of taking at least a first and a second position in relation to each other, a first optoelectronic device connected with said first electronic components, a second optoelectronic device connected with said second electronic components, and a first light duct, and a second light duct, wherein said first light duct is arranged to provide a first light path optically coupling said optoelectronic devices in said first position, and said second light duct is arranged to provide a second light path optically coupling said optoelectronic devices in said second position.

Electronic device having optical data connection of movable housing parts

A communication link for communicating data between a first opto-electronic equipment capable of providing an optical signal and a second opto-electronic equipment capable of receiving the optical signal is described. The communication link includes a first optical channel and a second channel. The first optical channel is preferably a high-speed optical channel for conveying information requiring high-speed connection and the second channel is preferably a slow channel providing, for example a low-power monitoring function. An opto-mechanical device for providing a communication link, including a first opto-electronic equipment for providing an optical signal, a second opto-electronic equipment for receiving the optical signal, a first optical channel and a second channel is also described.

Communication link for communicating data

The invention relates to an electrically controlled device, which device comprises at least one electrically and individually controllable cell (L,R) with at least two separate electrode structures () arranged within the cell, each of the electrode structures capable of storing electric charges (C,C). The device further comprises a charge transfer mechanism (P,S,S,TFT,TFT) to transfer electric charges in a temporally controlled manner between the at least two separate electrode structures (), and that for at least one of the electrode structures within the cell, the charge transfer mechanism comprises substantially the only means for providing electrical power and/or electrical driving. The invention reduces the power consumption of the electrode structures by use of a new type of in-cell type charge recycling. The invention is especially suitable to be used in light modulator components based on the use of electrically deformable viscoelastic materials.

Electrical device utilizing charge recycling within a cell

A hinge position sensor comprises first and second members connected together to provide a hinge, and an optical fiber or wave-guide connected between the first and second members to provide a communication link between the first and second members. A laser or LED is coupled to the optical fiber or wave-guide to transmit optical signals between the first and second members and the optical signal is received by a photo-detector. The optical fiber or wave-guide is physically distorted by actuation of the hinge such that light escapes from the optical fiber or wave-guide. The optical power level received by the photo-detector is used to determine the position of the hinge.

Position sensor

An electrically controlled light modulator device comprises at least one cell, where two deformable dielectric layers meet at an interface, at least one of said layers consisting of viscoelastic relief forming gel. A first support electrode structure and a second signal electrode structures are arranged on separate sides of the dielectric layers in order to create an electric field passing through said layers and in order to create surface reliefs on the viscoelastic gel layer. According to the invention, a third enhancement electrode structure is arranged in the proximity of the first signal electrode structure. Applying enhancement signal voltage between the enhancement electrode structure and the signal electrode structure concentrates locally the electric field passing through the two deformable dielectric layers and therefore enhances the amplitude of the deformation of the viscoelastic gel layer.

Enhancement electrode configuration for electrically controlled light modulators

The specification and drawings present a new method and apparatus for a rotary hinge for transmitting an optical signal (e.g., comprising data) bi-directionally or uni-directionally from one part to another in an electronic device, wherein these parts can rotate relative to each other using the rotary hinge. The optical signal can be transferred from one side to the other side of the hinge independently from light transmitted in the opposite direction. A sending guiding element (e.g., an optical fiber or a light guide) can rotate around a common rotation axis permanently attached to the side sending the optical signal and the emitted optical beam is directed towards the common rotation axis. The receiving guiding element, which collects the optical beam, is concentrically in the center (coinciding with the common rotation axis) of the receiving side and permanently attached to it.
