A semiconductor device comprising a silicon substrate is provided with semiconductor elements on a first side, a metallization with connection pads for external contact, and a passivation layer which leaves the connection pads of the metallization exposed. The integrated circuit thus formed is also provided with a ceramic security coating having a matrix of monoaluminium phosphate which also leaves the connection pads of the metallization exposed. The protective layer can be deposited so as to have a thickness in the range from 2 to 10 &mgr;m, and hence is suitable for protecting integrated circuits used in smart cards. As a result, the information stored therein is not accessible.

A sol-gel coating of conductive materials, such as ITO, which is applied to a substrate, for example a display window of a cathode ray tube, is cured by means of a laser. This is preferably carried out in a water-containing atmosphere, for example an aqueous aerosol and/or a hydrogen-containing gas, such as a forming gas. This results in a stable resistance reduction by several hundred times.

Metal-oxide layers having a high .delta..sub.max, such as in particular magnesium-oxide layers, are provided on a glass substrate, such as a selection plate or a channel plate, of an electronic display device by means of a spray-pyrolysis process. To this end, a solution of a metal salt, such as Mg acetate, in ethanol or another (organic) solvent and/or water is sprayed onto a substrate which is maintained at a temperature of 350-550.degree. C. In a display device which is provided with such a layer on the bottoms and walls of the channels of the channel plate, a minimum transport voltage of 50-100V/cm is required.

Method of manufacturing a coating on a display screen and a display device comprising a display screen having a coating. The display screen 3 of a cathode ray tube 1 is provided with an antistatic coating 8 which comprises conductive, for example ATO (Sb:SnO.sub.2) particles. The coating comprises at least one additional layer (10) of silicon dioxide to obtain an antireflective effect.
