A splicing system that accommodates the splicing of tubing having internal power cable. The splice system is amenable to use in subterranean environments where sections of continuous tubing are spliced along with the splicing of internal power cable. The splice technique comprises utilization of an expandable connector that permits lineal movement of the internal segments of power cable.

Technique for providing power to a completion used in a subterranean environment

A system for splicing coiled tubing used in deploying downhole equipment and having an internal power cable. The system includes first and second segments of coiled tubing each having power cable disposed therein. Additionally, mounting fixtures are attached to the ends of the coiled tubing segments that are to be joined. The system further includes a movable canister that may be slid over the spliced segments of power cable and selectively engaged with the mounting fixtures. The canister provides structural integrity to the overall deployment tubing while protecting the internal power cable splice.

Splice system for use in splicing coiled tubing having internal power cable

A submersible pumping system for use in high temperature, wellbore applications. The system includes an electric submersible pumping unit, having at least a submersible motor, a motor protector and a submersible pump powered by the submersible motor. A uniquely designed power cable is coupled to the submersible motor to provide power thereto. The unique design of the power cable and its connector permit the use of the overall system in high temperature environments or applications where the system is exposed to high temperature conditions.

Power cable system for use in high temperature wellbore applications

A connector for use in a deployment system able to deploy and power a device, such as an electric submergible pumping system, in a well. The connector includes pluggable ends that permit connection adjacent segments, each having an outer section of tubing and an internal power cable. Each connector includes a tubing connector portion and a power cable connector portion that permit pluggable connection of sequential tubing segments when deploying a device or system downhole.

An oil-filled protector for use with an electric submergible motor, comprises a housing connectable to an electric submergible motor, and an oil-filled expandable chamber within the housing and in fluidic communication with the electric submergible motor. The expandable chamber is formed from an elastomeric material, and includes materials for preventing deleterious fluids, such as H2S, CO2 and CH4, from passing through the chamber and into the motor. Such materials include elastomeric materials with one or more metallic coatings or bonded layers. The chamber can include separate annular partitions to define an inner oil-filled region and an outer region filled with a barrier fluid that substantially inhibits the passage of the deleterious fluids.

Electric submergible motor protector

A method of suspending an electric submergible pumping system within a wellbore includes inserting an electric cable within a conduit, such as coiled tubing. An electric submergible pumping system is connected to the conduit, and the electric cable is connected to an electric motor of the electric submergible pumping system. The electric submergible pumping system and the conduit are inserted into the wellbore, and the electric cable is permitted to buckle in a manner so that the electric cable buckles and contacts an interior surface of the conduit at a plurality of locations to prevent longitudinal movement of the electric cable within the conduit. Since the cable is self supported within the conduit, there is no need for cable anchors or other devices to transfer the weight of the cable to the conduit.
