There is disclosed a telemetry monitoring apparatus for remotely monitoring a plurality of users, such as firefighters, working in a hazardous environment. The apparatus comprises a plurality of portable devices, each arranged to be associated with breathing apparatus worn by a user, and at least one central monitoring station onto which portable devices can be logged on and monitored. The portable devices are arranged to transmit a logon message including an identifier identifying either the user or the portable device.

A monitoring apparatus for monitoring a wearer of a breathing apparatus including a source of breathable gas which is supplied to a delivery device via a fluid line, the monitoring apparatus including a breathing detector arranged to determine if breathing using the breathing apparatus has commenced, and a mobile monitoring device arranged to be associated with the wearer and which can be activated to monitor the motion of the wearer. The monitoring apparatus is arranged to activate the mobile monitoring device when it is determined that breathing has commenced.

A closed circuit breathing apparatus () and a method of operating the same, the method comprising: determining whether a sufficient amount of replenishing gas is being supplied to a breathing circuit (); sensing pressure within the breathing circuit () using a pressure sensor (); generating a pressure signal representative of the sensed pressure; determining whether the pressure signal is representative of breathing; and generating an alert if it is determined that both an insufficient amount of replenishing gas, such as oxygen, is being supplied to the breathing circuit () and that the pressure signal is representative of breathing.
