A laser activated luminescence system is provided. Another aspect pertains to a system employing a plasma assisted vapor deposition reactor which creates diamond layers on a substrate, in combination with a laser system to at least photoactivate and anneal the diamond layers. Yet another aspect of the present system uses a laser to assist with placement of color centers, such as nitrogen vacancy centers, in diamond. The present method uses lasers to manufacture more than two activated nitrogen vacancy center nodes in a diamond substrate, with nanometer spatial resolution and at a predetermined depth.

A laser system and method include a self-referencing shaper. A self-referencing pulse shaper is provided in an embodiment. Another aspect of a laser system includes at least one beam splitter splitting a reference beam from a working beam and a test beam, a delay optic delaying a reference laser beam, an active shaper, an interferometer, and a programmable controller. In another aspect, a method includes splitting an input laser pulse into a reference pulse and a shaping pulse, controlling phase and amplitude of the shaping pulse with an adjustable pulse shaper, creating an optical delay of the reference pulse, comparing a test pulse and the reference pulse after the controlling and delay, the laser system characterizing the input laser pulse and monitoring the laser system's own dispersion in a self-referenced manner, and correcting an output working laser pulse by adjusting the pulse shaper based on the comparing step.

The disclosure relates to piezoelectric apparatus containing ionic liquids. The piezoelectric apparatus includes a chamber defining an internal volume containing an ionic liquid therein. The ionic liquid can generate a voltage or current upon application of force to the chamber or cell, thus exhibiting a piezoelectric effect. The ionic liquid also can deform upon application of a voltage to the ionic liquid, thus exhibiting a converse piezoelectric effect. The piezoelectric apparatus further includes first and second electrodes in contact with the ionic liquid at first and second locations, such as at opposing locations in the chamber with the ionic liquid positioned between the electrodes. The piezoelectric apparatus, depending on whether it is configured to exhibit a piezoelectric effect or a converse piezoelectric effect, can form or otherwise be a component of various energy or sensing devices, such as an energy harvester, force sensor, piezo-pneumatic device or actuator, optical sensor, etc.

A laser system for blood assessment is provided. Another aspect of a laser system includes a container within which is blood, a laser operable to emit a laser beam at the container to vibrate the blood, a detector operable to detect a vibrational characteristic of the blood, a controller connected to the detector operable to automatically determine a characteristic of the blood based at least in part on the vibrational characteristic detected by the detector, and a display operable to indicate a determination result from the controller. Another aspect of the present blood or tissue assessment laser system includes a laser, a power supply, a detector, a controller and an electronic display, all contained within or coupled to a handheld and portable housing.

A system for determining a characteristic of a laser includes a collection housing receiving a laser beam comprising a first pulse, a second pulse and a time period between the first pulse and the second pulse. A photon counting detector receives photons from the laser beam disposed to generate photon signals from the laser beam and generating a start signal. A fast diode generates a stop signal to provide a time reference of counted photons ns. A controller is coupled to the photon counting detector and the fast diode. The controller counts photons from the photon counting detector occurring during the time period between the first and second pulse and generates a first output signal corresponding to a power during the time period between the first pulse and the second pulse.

Method and system for characterizing power in a high-power laser

The disclosure relates to materials and articles that provide an irreversible history of compression forces and torques experienced by the materials and articles. The disclosure relates more particularly to an multiple impact level detection assembly as well as related articles and methods. The multiple impact level detection assembly provides distinct impact patterns depending on the impact force and direction (for torqueing motions) received by the detection assembly. The detection assembly can be incorporated into a variety of articles and used in a variety of settings, for example to monitor personal safety in a protective garment such as a helmet. The detection assembly incorporates an impact detection medium (e.g., a plurality of microcapsules with an indicator therein), which can serve as an irreversible means for detecting impact on the assembly via a relief substrate incorporated into the assembly.

The disclosure relates to an irreversible dosimetric shock-detection substrate as well as related articles and methods. The shock-detection substrate incorporates a plurality of microcapsules serving as an irreversible means for detecting impact on the substrate. A shock above a characteristic threshold level experienced by the substrate induces an irreversible detectable change associated with the microcapsules upon shock-induced rupture. The irreversible detectable change provides a tamper-proof and non-electronic means for detecting a shock or impact. The shock-detection substrates can be incorporated into a variety of articles and used in a variety of settings, for example to monitor personal safety, to monitor article integrity, to monitor the end of the useful life of the shock-detection substrate itself, or in any other setting where it is desirable to irreversibly detect and/or localize a shock event.

Materials with detectable compression memory

The superposition of Laguerre-Gaussian guided into and scattered by a particle in a rotated fluid allows the detection of the rotational of the fluid. The presented system allows for virtually real-time determination of vorticity characterization in a fluid. The system allows the direct measurements of fluid flow vorticity using a spatially shaped beam with a superposition of Laguerre-Gaussian modes that reports on the rotational Doppler shift from microparticles intersecting the beam focus.

A laser system and method employing stimulated Raman scattering using a main laser pulse and a delayed replica reference pulse are provided. A further aspect calculates stimulated Raman loss and stimulated Raman gain from a reflected laser light scatter collected from a fabric or paper specimen. In another aspect, a laser system receives a low energy portion of a spectrum of main and reference laser pulses with a first photodetector, receives a higher energy portion of the spectrum of the main and reference pulses with a second photodetector, and uses a controller to determine a Raman active phonon transfer of energy manifested as an increase in the reflected laser scatter in a lower energy portion of the spectrum and a decrease in a higher energy portion of the spectrum. In yet another aspect, the controller automatically determines if a hazardous particle or substance such as an explosive, is present on a specimen.

Laser system for standoff detection

An adaptive laser system for ophthalmic use is provided. In another aspect, a relatively inexpensive laser is employed. In another aspect of the present system, non-linear optical imaging uses multiphoton fluorescences and/or second harmonic generation, to create three-dimensional mapping of a portion of the eye in combination with automated feedback to assist with a surgical operation. In a further aspect of the present system, the patient interface uses laser induced markings or indicia to aid in focusing and/or calibration. Still another aspect employs temporal focusing of the laser beam pulse.

Adaptive laser system for ophthalmic surgery

One aspect of the system provides the use of a laser with a mass spectrometer. Another aspect of the present application employs a laser emitting a pulse of less than one picosecond duration into an ion-trap mass spectrometer. In yet another aspect of the present application, a femtosecond laser beam pulse is emitted upon an ionized specimen to remove at least one electron therefrom.

A laser apparatus includes a fiber oscillator. In another aspect, an Ytterbium (Yb) doped fiber is employed. Another aspect provides an unamplified laser pulse emitted from an Yb fiber oscillator having a repetition rate less than 5 MHz and a pulse energy greater than 100 nJ. In still an additional aspect, a flexible Yb fiber has a length greater than 1 m which is capable of being looped with an outside loop diameter less than 150 mm. Another aspect provides for a fiber oscillator with passive optical fiber lengths of at least 10 meters, and more preferably more than 100 meters while having repetition rates less than 4 MHz.
