Air-containing microcapsular opacifiers, optionally containing pigment particles incorporated in the microcapsular structure, have substantially continuous, organic polymeric solid walls and a particle diameter of about 0.5 micron to about 10 microns, e.g., less than 1 or 2 microns. The opacifiers are produced by heating precursor microcapsules containing a liquid core material to a temperature sufficient to substantially drive off the core material from the precursor microcapsules and replace it with air.

An improved process for the preparation of cationic resins derived from polyepoxides is disclosed. Typically, the process comprises contacting the polyepoxide with particular polyether polyols and heating the two together to form a resin which may then be reacted with a cationic base group former such as an amine and acid. Aqueous dispersions of the cationic resins prepared by the improved process are useful for coating applications, particularly cationic electrodeposition. They exhibit good low temperature cure response and the cured coatings have good physical properties such as resistance to water, detergent and salt spray corrosion.

Synthetic resins which are water-dispersible Zwitterion-containing resins and containing chemically-bound quaternary ammonium base groups can be dissolved or dispersed in water to provide aqueous coating compositions. Such compositions in which these resins are the major resinous component can be applied by electrodeposition and deposit on the cathode to provide coatings of improved properties including a high degree of resistance to corrosion or staining.

Articles coated with a resinous composition which is deposited from an aqueous dispersion comprising a quaternary ammonium base-containing polymer are disclosed. Also disclosed are thermosetting water-dispersible resinous compositions comprising the quaternary ammonium base group-containing polymers in combination with curing agents. Aqueous dispersions of the polymers are useful in coating applications such as cationic electrodeposition. The aqueous dispersions are also useful in conventional coating applications such as flow, dip, spray and roll coating.

A decorative laminate is formed by placing an adhesive impregnated or coated decorative sheet on a core section, applying a polyester resin composition containing a peroxide catalyst and a photosensitizer to a release material and gelling the polyester resin composition by subjecting it to actinic light and placing the gelled polyester resin backed with release material on the impregnated or coated sheet supported by the core material and heat-pressing to form a composite structure. The release material is then removed from the cured polyester resin layer. Alternatively the polyester resin composition may be applied to the decorative sheet gelled with actinic light and then placed on the core sample, placing a release material on the gelled polyester resin composition and heat-pressing the composite. The resulting laminate is abrasion and stain resistant.

Two-package polymeric compositions which form cured products having excellent stain and solvent resistance and having improved potlife comprise a polyepoxide and an addition interpolymer containing pendent salt groups formed by reacting carboxyl groups with a hindered amine and pendent amine groups formed by reacting carboxyl groups with an alkylenimine. The addition interpolymer when mixed with the polyepoxide reacts to form a cured, hard, stain and solvent resistant material. The stability of the mixed compositions, i.e., its potlife, is lengthened by utilizing a sterically-hindered tertiary amine to form the salt groups of the interpolymer.Stability of the addition interpolymer prior to mixing is improved by utilizing therein monomers which provide aminolysis-resistant groups in the interpolymer.

Thermosetting resins containing hydroxyl groups which can be cured with aminoplast resins are stabilized by the addition of 1,4-diazo[2,2,2]-bicyclooctane. This method is particularly useful in stabilizing the gloss retention of extensible coatings formed by curing a hydroxyl-containing urethane product with an aminoplast resin. Such coatings can be applied to virtually any solid substrate and are especially useful on rubbery, resilient substrates such as polyurethane or polyethylene foam, natural or synthetic rubber or rubber foam, and various elastomeric plastic materials. They are also particularly useful on other substrates such as mild steel or aluminum.

It has been found that aqueous coating compositions comprising a blocked organic polyisocyanate and quaternary sulfonium group-containing resin containing isocyanate reactive groups can be electrodeposited. These compositions deposit on the cathode to provide coatings having excellent properties including solvent resistance, salt spray and detergent resistance, hardness, flexibility, and most importantly a resistance to yellowing, especially when used to formulate white or pastel coatings.

A method of cationic electrodeposition employing an aqueous dispersion of a quaternary ammonium salt group-containing resin is disclosed. The resin comprises the reaction product of a polymeric tertiary amine and a 1,2-epoxy-containing material.

Process for electrodeposition of quaternary ammonium salt

A topcoat is applied over a coating which has been gelled by actinic light and which is curable by ionizing irradiation. The gelled coating and the topcoat are exposed to ionizing irradiation to cure the gelled coating. It is preferred that the topcoat as applied be curable by ionizing irradiation so that it will also be cured during exposure to ionizing irradiation.
