A method of providing, in a telecommunications network including at least a first and a second set of communication resources, a service to users in a condition of being provided said service both by the first set of communication resources and by the second set of communication resources. The method includes the steps of: upon receipt, through the first set of communication resources, of a service request related to the service from a user, attempting to redirect the service request to the second set of communication resources; and if the attempt succeeds, provisioning the service to the user by the second set of communication resources. The attempt to redirect the service request includes identifying a communication resource among the second set of communication resources, by either considering or not communication resources of the second set as candidates for the service request redirection based on a history criterion that takes into account an observation of the outcome of past redirection attempts.

Method and system for the common management of communication resources in a telecommunications network having distinct communication resources pools

A resource management apparatus adapted to implement resource management policies for the management of resources of a system, being susceptible of being assigned to entities requesting services to the system. The resource management apparatus includes: a configuration interface adapted to receive resource management configuration data from a user, the configuration data including a resource management decision logic adapted to specify a resource management policy; a resource management policy implementation unit responsive to service requests from the requesting entities and adapted to manage the assignment of the resources of the system to the requesting entities based on the resource management decision logic. The configuration interface is adapted to receive, and the resource management policy implementation unit is adapted to manage resource management decision logic structured as a set of one or more decision rules, each decision rule including: a description of at least one service request intended to be governed by the decision rule; a description of a state of the system in respect of which the decision rule is intended to apply; and action to be taken by the apparatus in case the decision rule applies.

Apparatus and method for implementing configurable resource management policies

The provision of services to the users of a multi-resource communication network is controlled by modelling the system made up of these resources as a Markov chain, wherein each state of the Markov chain is identified by a respective set of values of the numbers of the users served by each of the resources, and the transitions between states are represented by the allocation and de-allocation to the users of the services provided by the resources. A cost function is defined wherein each of the states gives a respective contribution weighted by the probability that the Markov chain is in that state, such probability being a function of the possible transitions between the states. A plurality of transitions between the states is thus identified that optimizes the cost function, and the resources are allocated to the users according to such plurality of transitions that optimizes the cost function.

Method and system for controlling the allocation of services in a communication network, and corresponding network and computer-program product

Monitoring system includes a set of peripheral monitoring agents including processing functionalities housed in SIMS. Such processing functionalities, depending at least on operating conditions of each terminal and its respective SIMS, are able to adaptively establish a distribution of measuring functionalities included in the peripheral monitoring agents between the terminal itself (for example storing them in the related memory or multimedia card) and its respective SIM.

System for monitoring the quality of service in a communication network

A method of managing radio resources of a radio communications network, includes: upon receiving a new service request for a service to be provided, assessing whether there are radio resources of a first set, adapted to and available for satisfying the request, and: in the affirmative case, exploiting the available radio resources for satisfying the new service request; in the negative case: calculating an amount of the adapted radio resources to be set free for satisfying the service request; assessing whether there is at least one first already served service request that, at the time the new service request is received, is being served using the calculated amount of radio resources of the first set, and that can continue to be served by assigning thereto radio resources of a second set, different from the first set, not adapted to serving the new serving request; in the affirmative case: calculating an amount of the radio resources of the second set necessary for serving the at least one already served service request; assessing whether the calculated amount of radio resources of the second set is available; if the calculated amount of radio resources of the second set is available, re-assigning to the at least one first already served service request the radio resources of the second set, and assigning to the new service request the radio resources of the first set previously assigned to the already served service request; in the negative case, refusing the new service request.

Method and apparatus for managing the assignment of radio resources of a radio communications network

To measure the quality of service at the application level in a telecommunication network (N), a function (A) is provided for carrying out sessions at the application level on said network (N). Through this activation function (A), sessions are then carried out, measuring (F) and also storing (Hin a set of points (S, . . . , S, S) of the network (N) data indicative of the behavior of said network. The possible occurrence of critical situations relating to quality of service is verified (B) and, upon the occurrence of a said critical situation, a trigger signal (Trigger) is generated. By effect of the generation of said trigger signal, the data indicative of the behavior of the network measured and stored in the aforesaid set of points of the network (N) are collected in centralized fashion (H). The data thus collected are indicative of the end-to-end quality of service of the network (N) itself. Preferential application to packet networks like mobile telephony network such as GPRS or UMTS networks.

Method and system for monitoring the quality of service in telecommunication networks, components and compute products thereof

The present invention relates to a system (), method and terminal () for measuring the quality of service or QoS for services, for example, of the Internet type in which a telecommunications network () supports the delivery of the services by a server (). The system () and the corresponding method allow to collect by means of the network () the QoS information, in particular information of insufficient QoS, to identify the causes of insufficient QoS and to discriminate in the attribution of said causes among the terminal (), the server () or the network itself (). The terminal () in addition to generating 'objective' information about the QoS, such as the time for downloading a Web page, dimensions of the Web page and number of objects composing the page, is also able to generate 'subjective' information, indicative of the actual QoS perceived by a user of the terminal ().
