A method of terminating at least one conductor of a superconducting cable comprising a plurality of superconducting tapes, comprising the steps of associating an electrically conductive connector radially at the at least one conductor, embedding and end of the superconducting tapes in a thermosetting resin, embedding an end portion of the superconducting tapes in a solder and achieving an electric contact by the solder. Moreover, the invention relates to a terminated conductor of a superconducting cable, a superconducting cable, a joint between conductors of two superconducting cables, a current transmission/distribution network, and a terminator for at least one conductor of a superconducting cable that embody the above method.

Method for terminating a conductor of a superconducting cable

A system () for transporting electric energy in superconductivity conditions includes a superconducting cable () including superconducting material, and a cryogenic plant () for cooling said superconducting cable () below the critical temperature of the material, comprising: a) a circuit () for circulating a first refrigerating fluid having a first predetermined temperature lower than the critical temperature of the superconducting material, from and to the superconducting cable (); b) a refrigerating circuit () for cooling a second refrigerating fluid to a second predetermined temperature lower than the temperature of the first refrigerating fluid; c) a heat exchange unit () for effecting a heat exchange between the first and second refrigerating fluids, which is characterized in that the heat exchange unit () is provided with a storage unit () of a third refrigerating fluid having a third predetermined temperature lower than the temperature of the first refrigerating fluid and being in heat exchange relationship with the first and second fluids.

System for transmitting electric energy in superconductivity conditions and method for refrigerating in a continuous superconducting cable

A superconducting cable having at least one phase and having: a) a layer of tapes of superconducting material; b) a tubular element of superconducting material for supporting said layer of tapes, said tubular element having at least one portion made of metallic material, and being in electrical contact with the layer of tapes of superconducting material; c) a cooling circuit adapted to cool the superconducting material to a working temperature not higher than its critical temperature, having a fluid at a predetermined working pressure ranging between a minimum value and a maximum value; wherein the deformation of said tapes of superconducting material, consequent to a temperature variation between the room temperature and the working temperature of the cable is lower than the critical deformation of the same tapes. A predetermined amount of conductive material of resistive type in electrical contact with the layer of superconducting material is present, such that the maximum temperature reached by the superconducting material in case of short circuit is lower than the minimum temperature between the critical temperature of the superconducting material and the boiling temperature of said cooling fluid at the minimum working pressure of said fluid.

Superconducting cable

A high temperature superconducting cable includes a tubular support and a plurality of superconducting tapes. The superconducting tapes include a superconducting material enclosed in a metal covering, spirally wound onto the tubular support to form at least an electroinsulated, thermally-insulated, and refrigerated superconducting layer. The superconducting tapes also include at least a metal strip coupled to the metal covering. A process for manufacturing high temperature superconducting cables is also disclosed.

High temperature superconducting cable

The invention features a superconducting ceramic conductor for use in a preselected fluid cryogen. The conductor includes a composite ceramic superconducting wire having an outer surface along its length and a sealing structure hermetically surrounding the outer surface to prevent the cryogen from infiltrating into the wire and degrading its superconducting properties. The sealing. structure includes a cured polymer layer encircling the outside surface of the wire.

Polymer encapsulated ceramic superconductors

The present invention relates to an electrical power transmission system using superconductors which is compatible with conventional transmission systems. In a first aspect, a method for installing in an electrical power transmission system a connection using a coaxial superconducting cable, includes determining a reactance of a conventional cable suitable for the connection; installing the coaxial superconducting cable, and increasing a reactance of the coaxial superconducting cable, in such a way that the reactance of the superconducting cable is substantially equal to the reactance of the conventional cable. In particular, increasing the reactance of the coaxial superconducting cable includes connecting in series with the coaxial superconducting cable an inductive element, preferably made from a superconducting material.

Electrical power transmission system using superconductors

A superconducting cable includes a cryogenic fluid, a superconducting conductor, and a cryostat. A layer impervious to the cryogenic fluid is provided between the superconducting conductor and the cryogenic fluid. The superconducting conductor operates in a space substantially free from fluids liquefying at a temperature greater than or equal to an operative temperature of the superconducting cable. A method for protecting a superconducting cable from formation of balloons includes isolating the superconducting conductor from the cryogenic fluid using a layer impervious to the cryogenic fluid and operating the superconducting conductor in a space substantially free from fluids liquefying at a temperature greater than or equal to an operative temperature of the superconducting cable. A current transmission/distribution network including at least one of the superconducting cables is also disclosed.

High power superconducting cable

The invention features a superconducting conductor for use in a preselected fluid cryogen including a composite ceramic superconducting wire having an outer surface along its length; and a sealing structure hermetically surrounding the outer surface to prevent the cryogen from infiltrating into the wire and degrading its superconducting properties, even under pressurized conditions. The superconducting conductor can be used in superconducting cabling and coil applications. The sealing structure can be formed by laminating metallic tapes to the wire, encircling at least one metallic sheet around the outer surface of the wire, welding a plurality of metallic sheets to one another to encircle the outer surface of the wire, or forming a polymer coating completely covering the outer surface of the wire.

Encapsulated ceramic superconductors

A superconducting cable for high power with at least one phase includes a superconducting core wherein a plurality of elements are housed, which are structurally independent and magnetically uncoupled, each of which includes&mdash;for each phase&mdash;a couple of phase and neutral coaxial conductors, each formed by at least a layer of superconducting material, electrically insulated from one another by interposition of a dielectric material. As a result of the distribution of the superconducting material into several coaxial conductive elements, the cable allows to transmit high current amounts in conditions of superconductivity, while using a high-temperature superconducting material sensitive to the magnetic field. The conductive elements are connected at the ends to yield a mean exploitation efficiency of 100%.
