Optical coupling techniques between an optical fiber and another optical device, such as a planar optical waveguide, or a probed region are disclosed. An optical fiber for lateral optical coupling includes a cladding, a core disposed in the cladding, a reflecting structure inclined relative to the fiber axis, and a light-converging structure embedded in the cladding. The reflecting structure is configured to reflect light between the core and a lateral coupling path extending and providing lateral optical coupling between the core and an exterior of the fiber. The cladding-embedded light-converging structure is configured to intercept and converge light traveling along the lateral coupling path. In some implementations, the optical fiber is a fiber-optic transition coupled between a main optical fiber and another optical device or a probed region. A coupled optical system including an optical fiber coupled to another optical device is also disclosed.

An optical module for use in a motion responsive system includes a support and a proof mass mechanically coupled and displaceable relative to the support along at least one sensing axis in response to a motion experienced by the support. The module also includes an optical monitoring assembly for monitoring the proof mass with an optical beam impinging on the proof mass, the beam including a plurality of dedicated spectral components. The module further includes an optical spectral filter including a plurality of filtering regions, each being associated with a corresponding dedicated spectral component and having a spectral profile including a distinct dedicated filtering band encompassing the spectral component, such that a displacement of the proof mass along the at least one sensing axis produces, after filtering of the beam, a change in optical power of the spectral components indicative of the motion experienced by the support.

All-optical system responsive to motion and optical module for use in the same

A method for operating a LED lighting system at a target output color is provided. The LED system includes a color sensor and three or more LED emitters each operable at a controllable emitter drive setting. The method provides at least one calibration matrix defining a relationship between measurements obtained from the color sensor, represented by sensor color point coordinates, and absolute color point coordinates in an absolute color space. In some embodiments, a calibration matrix defining a non-linear relationship between the two color spaces is provided. In other embodiments, individual calibration matrices are provided for each LED emitter.

Operation of a LED lighting system at a target output color using a color sensor

A method for operating a LED lighting system has three or more LED emitters of different colors. The method allows finding the optimal drive setting for each LED emitter of the system, taking into account a specific target color. The method involves providing calibration data for each LED emitter at a plurality of values of drive setting and junction temperature, and executing a drive recursion loop calculating the drive setting of each emitter based on an input value for the temperature of each emitter and in view of the target output color and of the calibration data. Advantageously, this can be accomplished without measuring the color emitted by the LED lighting system, that is, no color feedback is required. A LED lighting system implementing the method is also disclosed.

A circuit assembly controlling an optical system to generate optical pulses is provided. The optical system includes a seed light source optically coupled to an amplitude modulator. The circuit assembly includes a control circuit which generates a pulsed seed drive signal for driving the seed laser source, as well as logic signals defining successions of ON and OFF states and having a predetermined relative timing relationship. One or more of the logic signals is delayed by a corresponding programmable delay line to adjust the relative timing relationship between the logic signals. A logic gating module combines the logic signals according to one or more logical rule, thereby providing a modulator drive signal. Using this circuit assembly, the optical system outputs an optical pulse at each ON state of the modulator drive signal synchronized with the passage of one of the seed optical pulses through the amplitude modulator.

Circuit assembly for controlling an optical system to generate optical pulses and pulse bursts

High power optical pulses generating methods and laser oscillators are provided. A light generating module generates seed optical pulses having predetermined optical characteristics. A spectrum tailoring module is then used to tailor the spectral profile of the optical pulses. The spectral tailoring module includes a phase modulator which imposes a time-dependent phase variation on the optical pulses. The activation of the phase modulator is synchronized with the passage of the optical pulse therethough, thereby efficiently reducing the RF power necessary to operate the device.
