The present disclosure provides a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) device for demultiplexing an optical signal including a plurality of wavelength channels. The device comprises at least one demultiplexer block configured to provide, for each wavelength channel of the optical signal, two half-channel signals. The device further comprises a mode mapping block configured to map one half-channel signal related to a split wavelength channel into a first polarization mode, and the other half-channel signal related to the same split wavelength channel into a second polarization mode. The device also comprises an output block for each wavelength channel, each output block being configured to combine polarized half-channel signals related to the same wavelength channel.

Wavelength division multiplexing device and method

An optical chip comprises an input edge coupler having at least one input waveguide and configured to receive light on two orthogonal modes of same polarization, a demultiplexer configured to divide the two orthogonal modes into a mode carried on a first intermediate waveguide and a mode carried on a second intermediate waveguide independent from the first intermediate waveguide, a polarization multiplexer configured to recombine the modes carried on the intermediate waveguides into two polarization-orthogonal modes carried on one output waveguide.

Optical chip and method for coupling light

An optical coupling arrangement is provided, comprising a lightwave circuit (LC), a coupling element and an optical waveguide element, wherein the lightwave circuit has a first surface area and wherein the coupling element is attached to the first surface area) such that an optical signal can be transmitted from the lightwave circuit to the coupling element. The optical waveguide element is attached to the coupling element at a first junction zone such that the optical signal can be transmitted from the coupling element to the optical waveguide element). The coupling element is configured to perform mode transformation to the optical signal transmitted from the lightwave circuit to the optical waveguide element and such that adiabatic coupling of the optical signal to the optical waveguide element is enabled. Thus, a better coupling efficiency can be achieved.

Optical coupling arrangement

The present invention provides a waveguide structure for optical coupling. The waveguide structure includes a first waveguide embedded in a cladding of lower refractive index than the first waveguide, and a second waveguide of higher refractive index than the cladding and distanced from the first waveguide. The waveguide structure further includes an intermediate waveguide, of which at least a part is arranged between the first waveguide and the second waveguide. The first waveguide and the second waveguide each comprise a tapered end for coupling light into and/or out of the intermediate waveguide.
