Recent progress related to energy harvesting solutions and printed electronics is opening the opportunity for a smart label to combine chemical/physical color change technology with an electronic based reader architecture, which can be achieved with printed electronics technologies and can be suitable for monitoring applications that are very cost sensitive. The smart label provides an innovative product architecture to achieve a very low cost solution to monitor packaged items during storage and shipment. Exemplary applications of the smart label include, but are not limited to, cold chain monitoring, food monitoring, and in-package control of sensitive devices, such as electronic components.

Batteryless architecture for color detection in smart labels

Mechanical gauges remain a common means to present values of a system or system component to a user. Connecting mechanical gauges to allow for notification messages to be generated, when the value indicated by a needle of the gauge is of particular interest, provides for greater usability. Illuminating a narrow portion of a gauge and utilizing a light detector to determine if the needle is, or is not, reflecting the light emitted, allows for systems to be alerted when the gauge has a particular value. Additionally, the area of interest may be further divided and illuminated by differentiated light to allow the notification to further include the direction from which the needle has entered the area of interest.

Automated reader for gauge-based meters

A PCB based electrochemical sensor includes a PCB having a first electrode on a first surface of the PCB, and a second electrode on a second surface. A sensing element, such as a conductive wire, is attached to the first electrode. The PCB includes one or more through holes, and the conductive wire is positioned proximate one or more of the one or more through holes. When the PCB based electrochemical sensor is positioned in a solution to be sensed, the solution fills the through holes. The ions within the solution provide a current pathway between the conductive wire and the second electrode through the through holes. A voltage potential between the two electrodes is measured. The measured voltage potential is used to determine a value associated with the solution, such as a pH value.

Described herein is a method for and a device configured to generate an energy amount via a received magnetic field. A sensor may be configured to generate an output voltage based on a sensor reading by using a portion of the energy amount and a diode biased in its active region via a resistor may generate an operating voltage to shift the output voltage into a positive region. The resistor may be configured to modify an operating voltage of the diode by using a portion of the energy amount. An analog to digital converter may be configured to receive a combined voltage or to combine received voltages to convert a combined voltage such that a combined voltage is the output voltage shifted by or added to the operating voltage. A transmitter may transmit a sensor output based on the combined voltage by using a portion of the energy amount.

Sensor tunable offset removal circuit in passive tags

Described herein is a method for and a device configured to receive a magnetic filed at a near field communication (NFC) tag, generate energy via induction from the magnetic field, and activate a temperature sensor form at least a portion of the generated energy. An electrochemical sensor may be activated from a portion of the generated energy and a temperature value of a container, solution and/or a housing may be measured based on thermal conduction such that the temperature value is measured using a temperature sensor. A pH value may be measured using an electrochemical sensor. The temperature value may be transmitted to a first receiver using at least a portion of the generated energy and the pH value may be transmitted to a second receiver.

Wireless pH and temperature sensor for chemical containers

A lancing device (e.g., pen) having an integrated thermoelectric (e.g., Peltier) cooler. The lancing device includes an elongated heat accumulator having a lumen along which a piston having a lancet thereon translates back and forth. A Peltier device and a cooling ring are thermally interconnected to one end of the heat accumulator and include central apertures through which the lancet can extend. The lancing device also includes an integrated battery and microcontroller for supplying and regulating power to the Peltier device. Upon a current being sent through the Peltier device, a cold side of the Peltier device and hence the cooling ring gives up thermal energy and reduces in temperature. The cooling ring can then be placed about a body tissue (e.g., skin) for a period of time (e.g., 3-5 seconds) to desensitize the body tissue, and then the lancet can be fired to puncture the body tissue.

Systems and methods for employing asynchronous transceivers in synchronous data communications. For example, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver may be used to support SONET/SDH communications with or without G.709 coding. Such a transceiver is clocked with a recovered clock signal when a received synchronous signal is available and with a locally generated clock when no such remotely generated signal is available.

A printed circuit board (PCB) may be used in a first mode where boundary scan techniques are used to externally program and/or test devices on the PCB, or a second mode where an internal source programs devices using boundary scan techniques. In one implementation, there is also additional flexibility to include or skip devices in a boundary scan chain and to accommodate non-scan related functions for pins used for scanning. These various modes of operation may be selected by activating and deactivating buffers.
