New and Useful magnetic structures are provided. One feature of the magnetic structures is that they are configured to help minimize the air gap reluctance, improving the magnetic structure's coupling coefficient. Another feature is that reducing the windings AC impedance of a magnetic structure is produced by shielding the winding under ears formed of magnetic material. Still another feature is that leakage inductance of a magnetic structure is reduced, by making ears with cuts which converge toward the magnetic rods that are used in the formation of the structure.

Magnetic structures for large air gap

An improved primary or secondary side pad for a wireless transformer for inductive power transfer through an air gap is provided. The primary or secondary side pad includes a first plate, a second plate, and at least two rods which are linking the first and the second plate, where a winding is wound around each rod. A wireless transformer for inductive power transfer through an air gap includes a primary side pad and a secondary side pad of the transformer which is identical in shape and size.

A load communication device and method is provided, that identifies and transmits to a PSU the load requirement to operate a load device that is powered by the PSU, by analyzing the characteristics of current applied to the load device by a given input voltage generated by the PSU. The load communication device is configured to transmit between the PSU and the load device solely over the 2 wire cable that extends between the PSU and the load device.

Method and apparatus for load identification

A method is shown to create soft transition in selected topologies by controlling and designing the magnetizing current in the main transformer to exceed the output current at a certain point in the switching cycle.

A method is shown to improve any forward topology operation to achieve efficient resonant transitions by actively shorting the magnetizing inductance and release the short at another time thus producing lower switching losses independent of frequency. In another embodiment of this invention the current from the output inductor is allowed to go negative before the freewheeling synchronous rectifier is turned off, pushing the current back into the primary to create a soft transition across the switching elements before they are turned on. In another embodiment of the invention a current source is used to inject a negative current through the freewheeling synchronous rectifier before is turned off with the purpose of transferring the current into the primary to discharge the parasitic capacitances of the primary switchers before are turned on. An optimized control method can be utilized to tailor the frequency to create the necessary conditions requested by the embodiments of the invention.

Multiple resonant cells for wireless power mats

A new method of extracting information from a current waveform for the purpose of controlling a resonant converter is presented. The method comprises the step of sampling the converter waveform exactly three times in half a period of the converter waveform or sampling the converter waveform exactly at three different positions in a sequence on different periods of the converter waveform and the step of extracting waveform information to produce a fundamental component and a triangular component of the converter waveform. The information could also be used for the purpose of predicting the inductance and load of a circuit to indicate alignment in a inductive charging system.

Intelligent current analysis for resonant converters

Several new and useful features for a magnetic structure are provided. One feature is that the magnetic structures are configured to help minimize the winding's AC losses, improving the system's efficiency. Another feature is that the combination of different magnetic hats creates a shaping path for the magnetic field. Still another feature is that a magnetic hat concept can be applied to a variety of magnetic core shapes.

Magnetic configuration for high efficiency power processing

A low profile magnetic element used in cooperation with a multilayer printed circuit board has two or more core arms penetrating the board from one outer surface to the other and a series of magnetic core elements, at least one on each side of the board, bridging pairs of the core arms to form a closed, unbranched flux path. Series-connected windings form a transformer primary and are wound on the core arms that penetrate the board. Parallel-connected windings form a transformer secondary and are also wound on the core arms. The series-connected windings and the parallel-connected windings may be buried windings printed on internal surfaces of the multilayer board. The connected in series primary windings all have the same number of turns and the parallel-connected secondary windings all have the same number of turns. The parallel secondary windings are connected in current additive fashion to afford a high current transformer output. Output treating circuitry can treat each output separately in parallel and identically, being connected between the winding outputs and their point of connection. The transformer core can be assembled entirely of C and I magnetic elements. In one embodiment, a pair of magnetic plates overlying the outer surfaces of the multilayer circuit board are in flux-conducting relation with all of the core arms penetrating the board.

An apparatus for controlling start up of supply voltages received from a power supply responding to control by a feedback signal includes: (a) first error amplifiers receiving a supply voltage at a first terminal, receiving a reference voltage at a second terminal and providing a first error signal to a switch indicating difference between the signals at the terminals; and (b) second error amplifiers having a first node coupled with the switch and for receiving the supply voltage and a second node receiving a reference voltage; the first node receives a sum of the first error signal and the supply voltage when the switch is in a first orientation, and receives the supply voltage when the switch is in a second orientation; each second error amplifier provides a second error signal indicating a difference between signals received at the nodes that is the feedback signal for controlling the power supply.
