Methods for forming high molecular weight chain-extended condensation polymers are disclosed. The methods include adding a chain extender during the polymerization process of a condensation polymer to provide a chain-extended condensation polymer, wherein the chain extender comprises a polymerization product of at least one epoxy-functional (meth)acrylic monomer, and at least one styrenic and/or (meth)acrylic monomer.

Process for the production of condensation polymers via in-reactor chain extension and products thereof

An epoxy resin with amine functionality is manufactured continuously through a first reaction zone in which an epoxide-functional resin is made by ring-opening addition, a second reaction zone in which the resin is reacted with amine to make an epoxide-functional product, and a third reaction zone in which the epoxide functional product is reacted with amine to make the epoxy resin with amine functionality. In other embodiments, some amine may be added in the first reaction zone to produce an epoxide functional product, with elimination of the second reaction zone, or all of the amine reactant may be added in the first reaction zone to produce an amine functional product, with elimination of both the second and third reaction zones. Optionally, solvent may be removed in an evaporation zone and recycled into the continuous process and further zones may be included to incorporate crosslinker, additives, and to emulsify the resin.

Process for continuous production of epoxy resins

A polymeric composition including a mono-functional, low molecular weight, low epoxy content end-cap which includes the polymerization product of at least one epoxy-functional monomer and at least one styrenic and/or (meth)acrylic monomer, with a polyfunctional chain extender; and at least one condensation polymer.

Oligomer-modified anionically polymerized polymers, reinforced materials made with the polymers and articles made from the reinforced materials are provided. The oligomer-modified polymers are made by reacting anionically polymerized polymers with low molecular weight acrylic oligomers. The oligomer-modified polymers may be used as adhesives, compatibilizers, reinforcing agents and impact modifiers.

A continuous polymerization process for producing reactive polymers comprises continuously charging into a first reaction zone at least one functional monomer and polymerizing the monomers to produce a first polymeric product having at least one functional group. This first polymeric product is then continuously directly charged into a second reaction zone together with at least one modifier reactant having a functional group that is complementary to the functional group of the first polymeric product. At least a portion of the modifier reactant reacts with at least one of the functional groups of the first polymeric product to produce a second polymeric product which incorporates at least a portion of the modifier reactant, such that the second polymeric product is a reactive polymer.

Process for continuous production of reactive polymers with in-line post-modification and products thereof

The invention provides chain extenders made from epoxy-functional (meth)acrylic monomers and styrenic and/or (meth)acrylic monomers. The invention further provides polymeric compositions made from the chain extenders and plastic articles made from the compositions. Finally, the invention provides methods of using the chain extenders to improve the properties of virgin, recycled, and reprocessed condensation polymers.

Oligomeric chain extenders for processing, post-processing and recycling of condensation polymers, synthesis, compositions and applications

The present invention provides a high temperature continuous polymerization and condensation process for preparing a polymeric product. The process includes continuously charging into a reaction zone: at least one radically-polymerizable monomer having a radically polymerizable group and at least one condensation reactive functionality; and at least one modifying agent having a functional group capable of reacting with the condensation reactive functionality. The reaction zone includes at least one primary reactor, but may, and preferably does, contain a secondary reactor. The process further includes maintaining an effective temperature in the primary reactor to cause polymerization of the monomer and to allow at least a portion of the condensation reactive functionality to react with the functional group of the modifying agent.

Process for producing polymers by free radical polymerization and condensation reaction, and products related thereto

A process is disclosed for a continuous, high temperature polymerization process for preparing a free radically polymerized epoxy-functional polymeric product. The process comprises continuously charging into a reactor at least one epoxy-functional acrylic monomer, and optionally at least one non-functional free radical polymerizable monomer. An optional free radical polymerization initiator may also be added. The reactor is maintained at an effective temperature for an effective period of time to cause polymerization of the monomers into a polymeric product, such that the polymeric product is formed substantially free of gel particles. A clear coating is also disclosed incorporating polymers of the present invention, such that the clear coating has a low Delta b value at standard conditions.

A process is disclosed for a continuous, high temperature polymerization process for preparing a gel free polymeric product. The process comprises continuously charging into a reactor at least one monomer such that the reactor is filled to 100 percent of its usable volume. The reactor is maintained at an effective temperature for an effective period of time to cause polymerization of the monomers into a polymeric product, such that the polymeric product is formed substantially free of gel particles.
