A novel class of bridged indicator dyes is disclosed which possess absorption in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These bridged indicator dyes are useful as light-absorbing, pH-sensitive optical filter agents in diffusion transfer photographic processes adapted to be performed in the presence of ambient light and to diffusion transfer products useful in such processes. These indicator dyes will also find utility in titrations and other analytical techniques and products where pH-sensitive indicator dyes are employed and absorption of infrared is useful.

Photographic products and processes

A thermographic dye transfer image-recording material is provided wherein a particular silver salt complex is employed as a source of silver ions, made available upon imagewise heating, to cleave a dye-providing material to provide a diffusible dye in an imagewise pattern corresponding to said imagewise heating. The silver salt complexes have improved solubility in the system providing for enhanced transferred image density.

Thermographic image-recording materials

A novel class of N-substituted triarylmethane sulfonamides is provided which undergo reversible oxidation into colored form and reversible reduction of the oxidized form into colorless form. The N-substituted triarylmethane sulfonamides can be represented by the formulae: ##STR1## wherein B is a carbocyclic ring or rings; T is a 5- or 6-membered ring; Y is a moiety selected from ##STR2## wherein E, positioned ortho or para to said --OH group, is selected from --OH, --NH.sub.2, --NHR', --NR'R' and --NHSO.sub.2 R' wherein R' and R' each are lower alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aralkyl wherein the aryl portion may be substituted with alkyl groups having 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and E' is hydrogen or a monovalent group that is substituted on one of the remaining carbon atoms; G and G' each are hydroxy or methoxy, provided one is hydroxy and the other is methoxy; and Z and Z' taken individually represent the moieties to complete the chromophoric system of a triarylmethane dye when said N-containing ring, T, is open and Z and Z' taken together represent the bridged moieties to complete the chromophoric system of a bridged triarylmethane dye when said N-containing ring, T, is open; and Y' represents the quinoid form of Y. Preferred embodiments comprise xanthene sulfonamides having N-aryl substituents, e.g., hydroquinone substituents. These compounds possess redox potentials ranging between about +200 to -500 millivolts and thus are useful as dyes for producing photographic, photothermographic, thermal, and pressure-induced images, as well as being useful as redox indicators in a wide variety of biological and chemical reactions.

N-substituted triarylmethane sulfonamides and method of preparation

A novel class of N-substituted triarylmethane sulfonamides is provided which undergo reversible oxidation into colored form and reversible reduction of the oxidized form into colorless form. Preferred embodiments comprise xanthene sulfonamides having N-aryl substituents, e.g., hydroquinone substituents. These compounds possess redox potentials ranging between about +200 to -500 millivolts and thus are useful as dyes for producing photographic, photothermographic, thermal, and pressure-induced images, as well as being useful as redox indicators in a wide variety of biological and chemical reactions.

Reversible redox-controlled imaging method

Disclosed is a class of bridged phthalides and sulfinate esters which exhibit reversible thermochromism. At room temperature and in the presence of base, these compounds are substantially colorless but upon the application of heat they become colored, reverting to their original colorless or weakly colored state upon cooling. This colorless to colored, temperature-dependent cycle can be repeated many times. These compounds have utility as temperature sensors and as thermal pH indicators.

Reversible redox-controlled imaging methods

In one aspect, this invention relates to a method of synthesizing certain 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-3-(carbocyclic aryl)-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxides (and -2,3-dihydronaphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxides) by reacting (a) a 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-benz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide wherein P is a protecting group or a 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-naphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxide wherein P is a protecting group and (b) a carbocyclic aryllithium compound to give (c) the corresponding 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-3-(carbocyclic aryl)-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]-isothiazole-1,1-dioxide or the corresponding 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-3-(carbocyclic aryl)-2,3-dihydronaphtho-[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxide. In another aspect, the present invention relates to the 3,3-disubstituted-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxides and the 3,3-disubstituted-2,3-dihydronaphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxides produced by the above-described method provided the 3,3 substituents are different, which compounds are useful in the synthesis of phenol and 1-naphthol sulfam(na)phthaleins employed, for example, as photographic optical filter agents and filter agent precursors.

Benzisothiazole and naphtho-1,2-thiazine compounds

This invention relates to 3-(phenyl/naphthyl)-benz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxides wherein the 3-phenyl or the 3-naphthyl group is substituted in the para position with hydroxy blocked with certain protecting groups. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of certain 3,3-disubstituted-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide dyes which find utility, for example, as photographic optical filter agents and filter agent precursors.

3-Substituted benz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxides

This invention relates to a method of synthesizing certain 3-(carbocyclic aryl)-3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxides (and -2,3-dihydronaphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxides) by reacting (a) a 4-OP-carbocyclic aryllithium compound wherein P is a protecting group and (b) a 3-(carbocyclic aryl)benz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide wherein said 3-(carbocyclic aryl) moiety is other than a 3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl) moiety to give (c) the corresponding 3-carbocyclic aryl)-3-(4'-OP-carbocyclic aryl)-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide. The -2,3-dihydronaphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxides are prepared in the same manner by reacting a 3-(carbocyclic aryl)naphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxide with said 4'-OP-carbocyclic aryllithium compound. In a further embodiment, the compounds synthesized according to the foregoing method are reacted with a carboxylic acid halide to give the corresponding 2-carbonyl-substituted 2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide (or -2,3-dihydronaphtho[1,8-de]-1,2-thiazine-1,1-dioxides) followed by removing the protecting group, P, with weak acid to yield certain phenol and 1-naphthol sulfam(na)phthaleins useful, e.g., as optical filter agents and filter agent precursors in photography.

Novel synthesis of 3,3-substituted dihydrobenzisothiazole-1,1-dioxides

This invention relates to carbocyclic aryl compounds substituted with a tetrahydro-2H,4H-1,3,6-dioxazocino moiety and to the preparation thereof. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of certain 3,3-disubstituted-2,3-dihydrobenz[d]isothiazole-1,1-dioxide dyes which find utility as, for example, photographic optical filter agents and filter agent precursors.
