Providing probe signals from a node includes receiving at the node an instruction to send the probe signals over channels, where the instruction comprises probe parameter values describing deployment of the probe signals. The node sends the probe signals to a controller through access points. Each access point is associated with one or more channels. The controller is operable to assign an access point to the node in accordance with an analysis of the probe signals.

Providing probe signals from a node to a centralized controller

A method includes identifying a plurality of communication channels at a wireless device and classifying each of the communication channels into one of a plurality of groups. The method also includes scanning the communication channels in the groups. The communication channels in at least one of the groups are scanned at a different frequency than the communication channels in at least one other of the groups. In addition, the method includes updating one or more of the groups based on the scans.

Method and apparatus for supporting user mobility in a communication system

A system includes an enterprise network having a call control system that manages telephony services for wireless handsets. At a remote site, a computing device establishes a secure, wireline communication session with the enterprise network. The computing device also establishes wireless, packet-based links with one or more handsets. The device acts as a relay to enable the handsets to receive telephony services managed by the enterprise network even though outside of the service area of the enterprise network.

A method for site administration includes receiving a user's instruction to invoke a tool at a wireless handset. The method also includes invoking execution of the tool at the wireless handset. The tool is operable to identify at least one characteristic of at least one access point in a communication system and to display the at least one characteristic associated with the at least one access point to the user at the handset.

Identifying one or more access points in one or more channels to facilitate communication includes identifying an access point in a channel in a first channel band of a first frequency range to facilitate communication with a network. The first channel band includes a plurality of channels and the first frequency range includes a plurality of channel bands. The identified access point is used to communicate with the network. A scanning sequence is initiated in the first frequency range and a second frequency range to identify one or more access points in one or more channels to facilitate communication. The second frequency range includes a plurality of channel bands.

Handing off a node from a first access point to a second access point includes facilitating communication between a node and a network using a first access point. A handoff rule of one or more handoff rules is accessed. One or more handoff factors associated with the first access point and a second access point are determined. A handoff factor is relevant in deciding whether to handoff from the first access point to the second access point. The handoff rule is applied to the one or more handoff factors. Handoff of the node to the second access point is initiated if the one or more handoff factors satisfy the applied handoff rule.

Handing off a node from a first access point to a second access point

A method includes establishing a communication session at a wireless device and monitoring at least one characteristic associated with the communication session. The method also includes adjusting at least one operational parameter of the wireless device based on the at least one monitored characteristic.
