The optical article of the invention, e.g., holographic recording medium or polymeric waveguide, is formed by mixing a matrix precursor and a photoactive monomer, and curing the mixture to form the matrix in situ. The reaction by which the matrix precursor is polymerized during the cure is independent from the reaction by which the photoactive monomer is polymerized during writing of data. In addition, the matrix polymer and the polymer resulting from polymerization of the photoactive monomer are compatible with each other. Use of a matrix precursor and photoactive monomer that polymerize by independent reactions substantially prevents cross-reaction between the photoactive monomer and the matrix precursor during the cure and inhibition of subsequent monomer polymerization. Use of a matrix precursor and photoactive monomer that result in compatible polymers substantially avoids phase separation. And in situ formation allows fabrication of articles with desirable thicknesses.

Optical article and process for forming article

High storage densities using a holographic system are achievable using a stratified medium while maintaining a relatively high selectivity upon reconstruction of the stored images. Such combination of high density and high selectivity is achievable by employing a stratified medium and a recording process where selectivity does not vary with recording thickness.

Holographic process and media therefor

A thick holographic recording medium suitable for use in multiplex holography is prepared from a solution of a bi-functional oligomer and a mono-functional monomer. Precuring, possibly at the same radiation wavelength used for recording, cross-links the oligomer, thereby creating a host for the recording monomer.

Holographic recording

A holographic medium uses a photosensitive polymer medium. The shelf life of the photosensitive polymer medium is improved by hermetically sealing the polymer between glass plates. The hermetic seal is designed so that high T.sub.g materials, or solder, can be used as the sealant without damage to the polymer already contained between the plates. The hermetic seal comprises metal foils attached to the plates with the edges thereof extending away from the plates in tab-like fashion. The foils are attached prior to filling the assembly with polymer. After filling, the outer edges of the foil tabs are the sealed with local heating away from the site of the polymer, or crimped using mechanical crimping.

Holographic media

The photorecording medium of the invention is formed by mixing a matrix precursor and a photoactive monomer, and curing the mixture to form the matrix in situ. Recording medium and process for forming medium

A method for determining a volume change of a viscous liquid during a physical or chemical process is disclosed. The volume change of the viscous liquid is determined by confining a layer of a viscous liquid on a portion of a rigid body and then measuring the linear (one dimensional) displacement of a planar surface formed thereon, as the viscous liquid undergoes the physical or chemical process. The surface of the layer of the viscous liquid is planar relative to the rigid body.

Method for determining volume changes in viscous liquids

An optical fiber protected from degradation caused by corrosion from environmental fluids. The optical fiber includes a core-cladding assembly surrounded with a thin quasi metal oxide film (preferably .about.10 nm in depth). Over time, particularly under the influence of the elevated temperatures, the initially deposited reagents of the thin film oxidize or hydrolyze, removing the organic components, and bonding a quasi metal oxide film on the surface of the cladding. The resulting film significantly retards corrosion by blocking the environmental fluids from reacting with flaws in the cladding surface of the fiber, thus improving the mechanical performance and reliability of the optical fiber. In addition, the thin film protects the fiber against incidental abrasions. Alternatively, the quasi metal oxide reagents are deposited into a protective polymer layer of the fiber or a filling compound of a fiber cable, rather than directly onto the cladding surface, whereby the same protective effect is achieved when the reagents diffuse through the polymer layer or filling compound to the core-cladding surface.

A novel resist composition is disclosed. The resist composition is used in a lithographic process for device fabrication. The resist composition contains a polymer with phosphorus ester moieties. These moieties make the resist composition suitable for use in a variety of lithographic processes for fabricating integrated circuits.

Applicants have discovered that low pullout strength of optical fiber is attributable to volatile, unreacted monomers and impurities which result from the incomplete polymerization of liquid coating materials. They have further discovered that removing these unreacted liquids as by heating in air, heating in vacuum or by application of a solvent mixture improves fiber coating adhesion. By heating cured polymer-coated fiber in air at temperatures of 100.degree. C. or more, the fiber pullout strength is enhanced by 25% or more. This postcure heating can advantageously be clone off-line by placing loosely wound fiber in a heated oven. Alternatively, the postcure heating can be done on-line by reel-to-reel passage of the fiber through a heated furnace. Preferred temperatures are in the range 100.degree. C.-300.degree. C. Even greater enhancement of pullout strength can be effected by heating in vacuum or by solvent extraction.

Method for enhancing the pullout strength of polymer-coated optical fiber

Applicants have discovered that by heating cured polymer-coated fiber at temperatures of 100.degree. C. or more, they can enhance the fiber pullout strength by 25% or more. This postcure heating can advantageously be done off-line by placing loosely wound fiber in a heated oven. Alternatively the postcure heating can be done on-line by reel-to-reel passage of the fiber through a heated furnace. Preferred temperatures are in the range 100.degree. C.-300.degree. C.

This invention embodies an optical medium which consists of polar, multi-monomolecular layers of organic dye molecules with a net polar orientation, considerable second order optical nonlinearity, and excellent thermal stability. The medium is prepared by repeated sequential depositions on a surface of multivalent metal ions, e.g. Zr.sup.4+, and organic dyes terminated with an acidic functionality, e.g. a phosphonic acid, followed by activation of the surface for the next deposition sequence. The monolayers are deposited in the form of a multilayer film containing up to 1000 or more monolayers. The monolayers are deposited from liquid solutions; therefore they may be deposited on substrates having diverse topography and configurations. Second harmonic generation (SHG) analysis establishes that the multilayers have uniform polar order which does not decrease with increasing numbers of monolayers in the film. As determined by SHG, the inorganic interlayers impart orientational stability to the dye molecules up to 150.degree. C. and higher. The optical medium is useful in electrooptical or optical parametric devices comprising an optically nonlinear element and means for providing an optical input to and output from said element wherein said element comprises the nonlinear optical medium supported on a suitable base. When said device is employed in an electrooptic mode, it includes means for applying an electric field and/or optical input to said element for altering an optical property thereof.
