A roofing shingle is provided for shingling a roof with overlapped shingles, wherein the exposed portion of the shingle is selected to be of a height in the installed condition relative to the overall height of the shingle that enhances material utilization, to be at least approximately 44.4% efficient. This is accomplished by using an exposure height of 8 inches relative to an overall shingle height of 18 inches. The shingles are preferably constructed to have either 3 or 4 tabs, thereby having a ratio of exposure height to tab width of either 0.667 or 0.889, respectively. A larger exposure allows one to obtain 200 shingles for each 300 lineal feet of sheet shingle material, when the shingles have 18 inch overall height, and further allows an overall saving in the number of nails required to install a roof. The invention also contemplates variations in tab width within a given shingle and variations in number of tabs from about one to nine tabs in a given shingle.

A method is taught of making a multiple-layer, three-layer shingle, in which a base shingle layer is formed by separating a first shingle layer longitudinally into halves, with adhesive applied longitudinally to the halves of the base shingle layer, and with a second shingle layer then being separated into halves to function as secondary shingle layers that are applied over the adhesive on the base shingle layers, to secure them together, and with a third shingle layer being separated longitudinally into halves and then transversely into segments, with adhesive being applied transversely over granules on the top surface of the secondary shingle layer, with the segments of the third shingle layer forming a top shingle layer, with such segments being selectively applied to yield predetermined design effects. The result is to produce a three-layer laminated shingle, with the layers adhered together with granules on the top surfaces of the layers sandwiched therebetween. The secondary shingle layer may have a lower edge of its tabs foreshortened to reveal granules on the top surface of the base layer, which granules are preferably darker for contrasting effect.

Method of making a multi-layer shingle

A multi-layer shingle is provided, comprising three shingle layers; specifically, a base layer, a secondary layer and a top layer. The base layer and the secondary layer each have butt portions and tab portions. The secondary layer has tab portions that are preferably somewhat shorter than the tab portions of the base layer, showing portions of the tab portions of the base layer beneath the tab portioins of the secondary layer. The top, or third layer is comprised of individual strips that are preferably narrower than the tab portions of the secondary layer, and which preferably extend up into the butt portion of the secondary layer, in overlying relationship therewith. The base layer and secondary layer are secured together by preferably horizontal adhesive stripes. Adhesive also secures the top or third layer strips to the secondary layer, preferably by means of vertical adhesive stripes. Different granule applications are provided for desired aesthetic effects. Optionally, a shadow line may be provided on the upper surface of the secondary layer at the juncture of the butt and tab portions thereof. Different tab portions of the secondary layer may have different vertical heights, for random effect. Each of the base and secondary layers is approximately twice as wide as high, such that two such layers may be cut from a substantially square piece of shingle material. The final shingle may be palletized at two generally coplanar shingles per layer, with alternate layers disposed at 90 degrees relative to each other.
