Approaches for encoding/transcoding of digital video based on subjective video quality preferences or display device characteristics or capabilities. A set of esthetic digital video preferences are received from a user via a user interface. The user may be associated with a supplier or provider of digital video or may be a viewer of the digital video. A video quality profile that describes the set of esthetic digital video preferences or the characteristics or capabilities of a display device is created and stored. Upon determining that a video quality profile is associated with a compressed digital video bit stream, a final rate of compression for the compressed digital video bit stream is determined using one or more video quality profiles. In this way, a user's subjective video quality preferences or the characteristics or capabilities of a display device can be considered in encoding/transcoding digital video.

Encoding/transcoding based on subjective video quality preferences

Approaches for transcoding on-the-fly (TOTF). A digital video is encoded to produce a set of encoding decisions. A video quality profile is created that describes the set of encoding decisions. Upon determining that the video quality profile is associated with a compressed digital video bit stream, a final rate of compression is determined, frame by frame, for the compressed digital video bit stream using the video quality profile. The final rate of compression may be determined either internal or external to an encoder/transcoder. The video quality profile may be created by reviewing a plurality of encoding decisions to determine which encoding decisions merit inclusion based on a variety of criteria.

Transcoding on-the-fly (TOTF)

A technique for storing binary large objects (BLObs) in a distributed key-value storage system is disclosed. In an embodiment, the storage of BLObs involves dividing the BLObs into smaller 'BLOb chunks' and storing the BLOb chunks in storage nodes of the distributed key-value storage system. A BLOb is first associated with a key, referred to as a 'BLOb key,' and each subsequent BLOb chunk is associated with a different unique key, referred to as a &#x201c;BLOb chunk key.&#x201d; A list of the BLOb chunks keys is maintained and all of the BLOb chunks of the BLOb can be retrieved from the distributed key-value storage system using the BLOb chunks key list.

Embodiments of a method and system for enforcing a traffic policy at a Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) that controls the flow of traffic in a wireless communications network are described. In one embodiment, a method involves learning the topology of the wireless communications network, defining a virtual PEP (VPEP) within the topology of the wireless communications network, the VPEP comprising a location component that is remote from the PEP, associating a traffic policy with the VPEP, associating a traffic flow with the VPEP if the traffic flow has a characteristic that corresponds to the location component of the VPEP, and enforcing, at the PEP, the traffic policy that is associated with the VPEP against the traffic flow.

Method and system for enforcing traffic policies at a policy enforcement point in a wireless communications network

A system and method of facilitating server-based call processing services and call control may employ service triggers transported via a standard protocol. A service trigger may enable a service provider to modify or otherwise to customize the behavior of a call processing server arrangement; some or all of the functionality of the call processing server arrangement may be controlled or influenced in accordance with parameters set by the service provider and defined by the service trigger. A service trigger may enable a full range of customization options, ranging from simple modifications to complete service creation and implementation, interrupting and altering call control logic at any point during call control operations.

System and method of triggering services for call control

A modular communications platform and method for processing a communications command are described. The communications platform provides an infrastructure for telephony service providers. The platform includes a connection logic control module for supporting network services, a service logic control module for providing call control support, a subscriber and policy service module to respond to subscriber and policy requests, and an FCAPS module to execute fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security functions. The method can include the steps of receiving a communications command, generating an authentication request, generating an approval to the authentication request if the communications command is from an approved source, generating a billing request, generating a CPL script, generating instructions based on the CPL script, processing the instructions, generating a status report, and processing the billing request and a status report.
