An asymmetric release configuration including a projection, a recess receptive to the projection the recess having a first shoulder that when brought into contact with the projection in a first direction loads the projection in a first way that results in a first release threshold, and a second shoulder that when brought into contact with the projection in a second direction loads the projection in a second way that results in a second release threshold, the second release threshold being different than the first release threshold. A method for operating a borehole including running a configuration into a borehole to a target depth, resisting a load on the configuration in a first direction to a first release threshold, and resisting a load in another direction to a second release threshold different than the first release threshold.

Asymmetric release device, method, and system

A plug release system includes a tubular member having an outer surface and an inner surface defining a flow bore having a central longitudinal axis. A sleeve is positioned in the flow bore. The sleeve includes a first end having a radially outwardly extending annular lip, and a second end. A release mechanism is rotatably mounted in the tubular member radially offset from the central longitudinal axis. The release mechanism includes a sleeve support surface that selectively engages the radially extending annular lip. The release mechanism is rotatable between a first position wherein the sleeve maintains a plug in a retained configuration and a second position, wherein the sleeve releases the plug into the tubular member.

An apparatus for retaining and releasing a pump down plug includes an outer housing having a recess and a shifting sleeve that contains the pump down plug and is disposed within the outer housing. The shifting sleeve is configured to slide within the outer housing. The apparatus also includes a retaining element configured to engage the pump down plug to retain the pump down plug, the retaining element being restrained from outward movement by the outer housing in a first position of the shifting sleeve, wherein sliding the shifting sleeve into a second position results in outward movement of the retaining element into the recess to release the pump down plug.

A packer device for forming a fluid seal between an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member. The packer device includes a swage assembly that is expandable from a reduced diameter condition to an expanded diameter condition and a substantially deformable packer element for contacting and forming a fluid seal against a surrounding tubular. The packer element radially surrounds the swage assembly and being moved outwardly into a sealing configuration when the swage assembly is moved to its expanded diameter condition.

A cut and pull spear is configured to obtain multiple grips in a tubular to be cut under tension. The slips are set mechanically with the aid of drag blocks to hold a portion of the assembly while a mandrel is manipulated. An annular seal is set in conjunction with the slips to provide well control during the cut. An internal bypass around the seal can be in the open position to allow circulation during the cut. The bypass can be closed to control a well kick with mechanical manipulation as the seal remains set. If the tubular will not release after an initial cut, the spear can be triggered to release and be reset at another location. The mandrel is open to circulation while the slips and seal are set and the cut is being made. Cuttings are filtered before entering the bypass to keep the cuttings out of the blowout preventers.

An anchor system includes an anchoring device. The anchoring device is operably connected to at least one of a restriction indicator and a load isolation device each of which include a release member that releases at a selected load in order to ensure setting of the anchor at a desired location. A method is included.
