A binder for a self polishing and/or antifouling coating composition comprising an oligomer or polymer composition, formed from at least 50% by weight of monomer units of a vinyl ester of versatic acid.

Binder for a self polishing antifouling coating

A coating composition comprising: i) a carboxylic acid; comprising one or more of rosin or a hydrogenated derivative thereof; ii) at least one metal oxide compound; iii) a dehydrating agent; and iv) one or more binder; characterized in that, in the production of the coating composition, the dehydrating agent iii) is contacted with either of component i) or i) prior to the addition of the other component i) or ii).

Coating composition

A hydrolysable paint composition comprising organosilyl esters. The organosilyl esters are used in paint formulations which require hydrolysis of one or more of the components of the paint in use. The organosilylesters of the invention may also independently be film forming. The organosilyl ester may be the ester of a carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphoric acid. The binder systems of the invention can be used in paint compositions, such as self-polishing antifouling paints.

Silyl esters, their use in binder systems and paint compositions and a process for production thereof

A method of boosting alkaline hydrolysis or erodability of a hydrolysable paint formulation, the method comprising the step of adding an organosilyl ester to a binder system of a hydrolysable paint formulation. The booster is used in paint formulations which require hydrolysis of one or more of the components of the paint in use. The organosilylesters of the invention may also independently be film forming. The organosilyl ester may be the ester of a carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphoric acid. The binder systems of the invention can be used in paint compositions, such as self-polishing antifouling paints.

The present invention provides a process for the preparation of poly(silyl ester)s comprising a structural unit of the formula (I) wherein the process comprises the step of reacting a polyacid of formula (II) with a polyacyloxysilyl derivative of formula (III) while removing the formed acid group(s) of formula RZ(O)OH (IV). More particularly, this invention relates to the protection of submerged surfaces with alkylamine derivatives as antifouling agents. Increasing the self-polishing properties of antifouling paints

2-trihalogenomethyl-3-halogeno-4-cyano pyrrole derivatives which are substituted in position 5 and optionally in position 1 are used as barnaclecide in antifouling paints, which can therefore be formulated as light- or bright-colored, particularly as bright white. The halogens in positions 2 and 3 are independently selected from the group consisting of florine, chlorine and bromine, preferably florine in position 2 and bromine in position 3. The substituent in position 5 is selected from the group consisting of C1-8 alkyl, C1-8 monohalogenoalkyl, C5-6 cycloalkyl, C5-6 monohalogenocycloalkyl, benzyl, phenyl, mono- and di-halogeno-benzyl or -phenyl, mono- and di-C1-4 alkyl benzyl or phenyl, and monohalogeno mono-C1-4-alkyl benzyl or phenyl, the halogen being selected from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine, prefereably chlorine; the most preferred substituent in position 5 is parachlorophenyl. The optional substituent in position 1 is selected from the group consisting of C1-4 alkyl and C1-4 alkoxy C1-4 alkyl; it is preferred that no substituent be present in position 1. The most preferred compound for use as barnaclecide in the invention is 2-trifluoromethyl-3-bromo-4-cyano-5-parachlorophenyl pyrrole. Antifouling paints may contain 0.5 to 9.9 wt % of barnaclecide, based on the total weight of the dry mass of the composition, preferably 1 to 6 wt %, most preferably 1.5 to 4 wt %.
