A method of fabricating closely spaced pcLEDs () arranged in a matrix array () of perpendicular rows and columns comprises an initial phosphor deposition step in which phosphor () is deposited at alternating locations (pixels) in the matrix array in a checkerboard pattern, so that the locations () in the array at which phosphor () is deposited are not adjacent to each other. In a subsequent phosphor deposition step phosphor is deposited at the alternating locations at which phosphor was not deposited in the first deposition step. In between the two phosphor deposition steps, reflective or scattering structures () may be fabricated on sidewalls of the phosphor pixels to optically isolate pcLEDs in the resulting array from each other.

Two step phosphor deposition to make a matrix array

A laterally heterogenous wavelength-converting optical element includes pixel regions surrounded by border regions; each includes down-converting phosphor particles bound by a coating or solid medium. The pixel regions are aligned with LEDs of an array. The phosphor regions differ with respect to one or more of compositions, particle sizes, coating thicknesses, refractive indices, or voids (size, number density, or volume fraction). Those difference(s) can result in the border regions exhibiting larger optical scattering, which can improve contrast of down-converted light emitted by adjacent pixels of the array.

Laterally heterogenous wavelength-converting layer

Phosphor-converted LED side reflectors disclosed herein comprise pigments that are photochemically stable under illumination by light from the pcLED. The pigments absorb light in at least a portion of the spectrum of light emitted by the first phosphor converted LED. The side reflector may also comprise light scattering particles or air voids. The pigments, light scattering particles, or air voids may be homogeneously distributed in the reflector. Alternatively the side reflector may be layered, with the pigments, light scattering particles, or air voids inhomogeneously distributed in the reflector. The side reflector can include phosphor particles.

Pigmented and scattering particles in side coating materials for LED applications

Systems for apparatuses formed of light emitting devices. Solutions for controlling the off-state appearance of lighting system designs is disclosed. Thermochromic materials are selected in accordance with a desired off-state of an LED device. The thermochromic materials are applied to a structure that is in a light path of light emitted by the LED device. In the off-state the LED device produces a desired off-state colored appearance. When the LED device is in the on-state, the thermochromic materials heat up and become more and more transparent. The light emitted from the device in its on-state does not suffer from color shifting due to the presence of the thermochromic materials. Furthermore, light emitted from the LED device in its on-state does not suffer from attenuation due to the presence of the thermochromic materials. Techniques to select and position thermochromic materials in or around LED apparatuses are presented.

Controlling off-state appearance of a light emitting device

A method is described for low temperature curing of silicone structures, including the steps of providing patterning photoresist structures on a substrate. The photoresist structures define at least one open region that can be at least partially filled with a condensation cure silicone system. Vapor phase catalyst deposition is used to accelerate the cure of the condensation cure silicone, and the photoresist structure is removed to leave free standing or layered silicone structures. Phosphor containing silicone structures that are coatable with a reflective metal or other material are enabled by the method.

An adaptive lighting system comprises an array of independently controllable LEDs, and a metalens positioned to collimate, focus, or otherwise redirect light emitted by the array of LEDs. The adaptive lighting system may optionally include a pre-collimator positioned in the optical path between the array of LEDs and the metalens.

A lighting device is disclosed that includes a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in an array, a plurality of trenches disposed between and optically isolating the light emitting diodes, and a patterned converter layer disposed over an array surface formed by light emitting surfaces of the light emitting diodes and upper surfaces of the trenches, the patterned converter layers including a first region having a first converter and a second region having a second converter different from the first converter, the first region and second region disposed over different areas of the array surface.

A light emitting device and method of forming a light emitting device are disclosed. The light emitting device includes a light emitting diode and a phosphor layer formed on the light emitting diode, the phosphor layer including a plurality of phosphor particles formed in a particle layer, the particle layer including interstices between the phosphor particles, and a matrix material disposed in a portion of the interstices. A plurality of cavities may be disposed in a remaining portion of the interstices.

A first LED with a first LED sidewall is disclosed. A second LED with a second LED sidewall facing the first LED sidewall is also disclosed. A first dynamic optical isolation material between the first LED sidewall and the second LED sidewall and configured to change an optical state based on a state trigger such that a light behavior at the first LED sidewall for a light emitted by one of the first LED and the second LED is determined by the optical state, is also disclosed.

A first conversion layer material is formed on unmasked pixel areas of a substrate. Mask material is selectively removed from a second set of pixel areas, leaving a third set of pixel areas masked. A coating is formed on sidewalls of the second pixel areas, and then a second conversion layer material is formed on the second pixel areas and against their sidewalls. Mask material is removed from the third pixel areas, a coating is formed on sidewalls of the third pixel areas, and a third conversion layer material is formed on the third pixel areas and against their sidewalls. The resulting wavelength-conversion layer includes contiguously arranged regions of the first, second, and third conversion layer materials, at least two of which are wavelength-converting phosphor materials. The sidewall coatings between the regions act as barriers to lateral light transmission.

A lighting device comprises a light-emitting module with light-emitting elements, wherein the light-emitting elements are arranged adjacent to each other and are configured to emit light towards a light-emitting side. The light-emitting module is configured such that the light-emitting elements can be addressed partially independently of each other, such that some may be brought into a switched-on state while others are brought into a switched-off state. A top layer is disposed on the light-emitting module at the light-emitting side. Further comprising a switching material capable of a reversible change in transmittance for the light emitted by changing to a higher transmittance in regions where the top layer situated on light-emitting elements in the switched-on state or to a lower transmittance in regions of the top layer situated in the switched-off state. The invention further refers to methods for producing and operating a lighting device and using a lighting device.

Described herein is a system and method for tuning light scatter in an optically functional porous layer of an LED. The layer comprises a non-light absorbing material structure having a plurality of sub-micron pores and a polymer matrix. The non-light absorbing material forms either a plurality of micron-sized porous particles dispersed throughout the layer or a mesh slab, wherein a plurality of sub-micron pores is located within each micron-sized porous particle or forms an interconnected network of sub-micron pores within the mesh slab, respectively. A polymer matrix, such as a high refractive index silicone fills the plurality of sub-micron pores creating an interface between the materials. Refractive index differences between the materials allow for light scatter to occur at the interface of the materials. Light scatter can also be decreased as a function of temperature, creating a system for tuning light scatter in both an off state and on state of an LED.
