A piezoelectric mechanism is disclosed that is normally depressible but would not produce a spark, unless a latch member is first activated to engage the plexor relative to the piezoelectric system, so that when the piezoelectric mechanism is compressed, the plexor is released to impact the piezoelectric system to produce a spark to ignite fuel gas.

The piezoelectric ignition mechanism of the present invention has a telescopic assembly having an inner and an outer members aided by a return spring for maintaining a maximum extension between the members. The inner member includes a piezoelectric element which is immobilized between an anvil and impact pad over which a plexor strikes to generate a spark. An impact spring for aiding the plexor is guided in the interior of the telescopic assembly and is disposed between the plexor and an end member connected to the outer telescopic member. A resistant spring is also disposed at or near the end member to provide additional resistance to the operation of the piezoelectric mechanism in order to discourage the undesirable operation by young users.

This mechanism of the invention has two telescopic assemblies (1, 2) aided by a spring (20) for maintaining a maximum extension position between the assemblies. The interior assembly (1) includes a piezoelectric element (3) which is immobilized between an anvil (4) and a limiting piece (5) over which a plexor (6) hits to generate the lighting spark. The external telescopic assembly (2) is prevented from rotation relative to the internal one (1) by an angular piece (22) having orthogonal flanks. One flank of this angular piece has a central slot forming two lugs (24), which enter respective parallel notches (23) of the internal telescopic assembly (1) when crossing its wall. The other flank contacts one of the external faces of the other telescopic assembly. The spring (20) is external and is axially distant from the piezoelectric element (3). Another spring (14), for aiding the plexor (6), is totally guided in the interior of the telescopic assembly (1) and remains, in turn, included in the circular void of the closing cap (15) of the external telescopic assembly (2). The closing cap (15) is axially displaceable with respect to the assembly (2), with the windows (17) therein having a greater length for connection of the cap, and being provided with teeth (11).

The body (2) has in its end opposite the emergence of the body (1) with a widened axial recess where there is a pair of confronting windows in which a cover (14) is secured in which springs (13, 17) which aid the firing hammer and telescopic body (1) are included.
