A telecommunications device including a laptop computer having a telephony soft client. According to embodiments of the present invention, calls may be received even when the laptop computer is turned off. The laptop computer wakes up responsive to detecting an incoming call. In some embodiments, the system checks on a user presence status before waking up the laptop. In some embodiments, the telephony soft client may be quick booted to allow a user to make an emergency telephone call, without fully booting the laptop computer.

A telecommunications device includes a laptop computer having a telephony soft client that may run, for example, in a browser window. The telephony soft client includes a utility to allow it to determine the laptop's local external IP address and from it, the local country. The telephony soft client then performs a lookup of the local country's emergency telephone number, either from a local table or from a specially maintained remote database. The local emergency telephone number can then be displayed, or programmed to a 'quick dial' key.

According to embodiments of the present invention, the communication system may include a number of locations, each of which has a known or expected number of users but an unknown number of needed access points. Each access point in the communication system may be treated as an individual switch with a limited number of connections (e.g., line connections, gateway channels), even though the number of required access points per location is unknown and the number of users per access point is unknown. As part of the design or determination process, inventory information for one or more locations may be determined. Switch over occurs from a main server to a stand-by server for supporting or facilitating calls having traffic routed across an IP network when the main server is disrupted or becomes unavailable. The main server initiates one or more signals provided to the stand-by server that inform the stand-by server of availability of the main server. When the stand-by server does not receive a designated number of the signals, or the main server fails to respond to a request or inquiry from the stand-by server regarding the signal, the stand-by server may initiate providing support for the calls previously supported by the main server and request call state information at the time of switch over from the main server to the stand-by server. As a result, the stand-by server does not need to receive call state information prior to the time of switch over.

A method and a system for improving the exchange of data between a master system and multiple slave systems involves bundling multiple abbreviated messages into a single frame and transmitting the single frame across a long delay communications link. The abbreviated messages do not comply with a given transmission protocol such as high-level data link control (HDLC), while the single frame does comply with the transmission protocol. The abbreviated messages are then used to build multiple protocol-compliant frames that are sequentially transmitted across short delay communications links. By bundling multiple abbreviated messages into a single frame, the number of frame transmissions required across the long delay communications link is minimized, while the sequential transmission of protocol-compliant frames to and from the slave systems is accomplished.

Apparatus and method for improving performance in master and slave communications systems

A data compression/expansion method and apparatus are provided. The data compression apparatus (70) includes a repetitive symbol detector (72), a shift register (74), a FIFO (76), a byte counter (78), and a map buffer (80). The symbol detector (72) generates an output signal indicating the presence of repetitive symbols in an input data segment (10). The shift register (74) functions as a map generator, producing a map (16) for locating the repetitive symbols in the input segment (10). The FIFO (76) acts as a gate for removing the repetitive symbols from the input segment to produce a compressed output segment (14). The compressed segment (14) and map (16) can then be transmitted to the expansion apparatus (90). The data expansion apparatus (90) includes a buffer (92), a shift register (94), and a multiplexer (95). The buffer (92) temporarily stores the compressed segment (14). The shift register (74) and multiplexer (95) cooperate to decompress the output segment (14) by re-inserting the repetitive symbols according to the map (16). The compression/expansion apparatuses (70, 90) provide an efficient system for removing frequently occurring symbols from a communications channel.
