A metal cutting insert has a substrate body of cemented carbide, cermet, or ceramic and at least one cutting edge defined between a rake face and a relief face. The cutting insert has a CVD coating including a layer of aluminum titanium nitride having a cubic face centered lattice structure, represented by a formula (AlTiM)CNwherein a stoichiometry coefficient of aluminum is 0.30<x<0.95, wherein M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Cl and Ar, with a stoichiometry coefficient of which is 0≤y<0.01, and wherein a stoichiometry coefficient of carbon is 0≤z<0.3. The (AlTiM)CNlayer satisfies a relationship 10<|S-S|<500 MPa wherein Sis the residual stress measured on the rake face, and Sis the residual stress measured on the relief face.

A coated cutting tool has a substrate and a coating. The coating includes at least one multi-nano-layer having a nano-composite nano-layer formed of crystalline (TiAlCr)N and amorphous SiN, wherein 0.25&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.75, 0.25&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.75, 0.05&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.2, 0.85&#x2266;x+y+z&#x2266;0.97. The atomic ratio of silicon is 1&#x2212;x&#x2212;y&#x2212;z and 1&#x2212;x&#x2212;z&#x3c;0.75 and the thickness of the nano-composite nano-layer is from 1 nm to 100 nm.

Coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert has a multilayer ceramic coating. The multilayer ceramic coating is a stratified structure of alternating sub layers of an oxide material and interfacial layers of a second material having good adhesion with the oxide material. The ceramic coating is deposited by chemical vapor deposition; each subsequently deposited interfacial layer serving to terminate a previously deposited oxide material sub layer and to serve as a surface for deposition of a subsequent oxide material sub layer. The second material is a solid solution of at least one element of the oxide material in a hard material.
