A seamed wet press felt installed in a press position in a papermaking machine has a base fabric with end loops intermeshed and joined in the seam and a layer of batt material needled to the base fabric and which was cut adjacent the seam area prior to installation on the machine and then refelted after installation so as to eradicate the cut and to provide a batt layer having a continuous, homogeneous paper supporting surface throughout its length.

A papermaking machine and a seamed wet press felt. Papermakers wet felts

Process of manufacturing felts in which a batt is fastened to a felt on its one or two sides, said batt (5) consisting of one or several layers of fibers and characterized in that said layers are obtained from carding the fibers and possibly preneedling them by passage through a preneedling machine with low density needles, said layers being densified by at least three passages through a needling machine (1) with high needle density, and at least one of those passages going in the opposite direction of the others, said batt (5) created in such a way then being fastened to the felt (10). The wet felt obtained in this way has very good cohesion and very high resistance, and the felt is neither damaged nor filled with fibers, which provides it with good air and water permeability. The invention also relates to a machine to densify batts.

Papermaker's wet press felt with predensified batt thereon

Process of manufacturing a papermakers' wet press felt for the wet end and a felt produced thereby with one or two flaps (14, 10), made of two batts (12, 13) needled onto each side of the felt (1), which ends in two rows of loops (4, 5) that are intended to seam the felt, characterized in that the rows of loops (4, 5) are joined during needling by temporary, removable connecting means (6) placed in relation to the flap(s) (14, 16) which have a greater width than the widths of the finally cut flaps (14, 16). The flap(s) (14, 10) are not damaged during the needling operation and are easily loosened without damage by removing the spiral (7) which form the temporary joining means (6).

Process to manufacture a felt with flap and a felt produced thereby

A method for seaming the ends of a papermaker's fabric during installation on papermaking equipment is disclosed. The method comprising the steps of: providing a base fabric having a batt needled thereto such that one end of the batt extends beyond the corresponding end of the base fabric to overlap the opposing end of the batt when the ends of the base fabric are joined; joining the base fabric to form a continuous belt; overlapping the extended end of the batt upon its opposite end; cutting the overlapping batt ends across the width of the fabric such that the opposing batt ends are configured to complement each other; combing each of the complementary batt ends such that the fiber dispersion of the batt material is decreased and the ends of the batt are lengthened; overlapping the combed batt ends; and needling the overlapping combed batt ends together and to the base fabric such that the batt material of each end of the batt is interdispersed with each other and the resultant material is essentially the same as the remainder of the fiber batt.

Method for steaming a papermaker's fabric

A papermaker's felt having improved water drainage properties for use in the press or dewatering section of papermaking machinery. The felt is formed by a base fabric comprised of machine and cross machine direction yarns in a plurality of large cable yarns which are secured to the base fabric by selected interweavings with the cross machine direction yarns. A felt batt is needled to the paper carrying surface of the felt and a second batt is needled to the machine or cable side of the fabric. The cables are maintained in a secured position generally spaced between pairs of machine direction yarns in the base fabric by means of the interweaving with the cross direction yarns.

Papermakers felt with improved drainage

A papermaker's wet felt having improved structural stability and void volume is disclosed. The fabric is at least three ply in construction and is constructed without binder yarns or adhesives.
