There is provided a hydration state indicator. The hydration state indicator comprises a watertight shell; a semi-permeable membrane configured to permit the passage of water molecules and to block the passage of molecules of at least one solute; a water-absorbent indicator layer enclosed by the shell and the membrane; and output means configured to provide an output. The water-absorbent indicator layer has a predetermined osmotic strength. The volume of at least one part of the indicator layer is variable in dependence on the water content of the indicator layer. The output is variable in dependence on the volume of the at least one part of the indicator layer.

There is provided a method of assessing the reliability of a measurement of blood pressure of a subject, the method in a control unit of an apparatus comprising obtaining a first measurement of at least one physiological characteristic of the subject that is indicative of the level of pain and/or stress of the subject, wherein the first measurement is made prior to a measurement of blood pressure being made; obtaining the measurement of blood pressure of the subject; obtaining a second measurement of the at least one physiological characteristic of the subject, wherein the second measurement is made after the measurement of blood pressure is made and prior to a subsequent measurement of blood pressure being made; and determining if the measurement of blood pressure is reliable based on the first measurement and the second measurement, wherein the measurement of blood pressure is determined to be reliable if the first measurement and the second measurement indicate a low level of pain and/or stress. A corresponding apparatus that implements the method is also provided.

According to an aspect, there is provided a device for measuring a physiological characteristic of a first subject, the device comprising a first electrode for contacting a part of the body of the first subject; a second electrode for contacting a part of the body of a second subject; and a control unit for obtaining an electrocardiogram, ECG, signal using the electrodes and for processing the ECG signal to determine a measurement of a physiological characteristic of the first subject; wherein the signal comprises a first ECG signal component relating to the first subject and a second ECG signal component relating to the second subject, and the control unit is configured to process the ECG signal obtained from the electrodes to extract the first ECG signal component relating to the first subject and to process the first ECG signal component to determine a measurement of the physiological characteristic of the first subject.

The device () comprises a receiving unit () for receiving an accelerometer signal () from an accelerometer sensor () worn by the user (), wherein the accelerometer signal () comprises components of a pulse signal () and a respiration signal (); and a processing unit () configured to: derive the pulse signal () and the respiration signal () from the accelerometer signal (); adapt the pulse signal () based on the respiration signal () in order to obtain a corrected pulse signal (); and derive a pain descriptor based on the corrected pulse signal ().
