An austenitic stainless steel alloy and turbocharger kinematic components are provided. An austenitic stainless steel alloy includes, by weight, about 23% to about 27% chromium, about 18% to about 22% nickel, about 0.5% to about 2.0% manganese, about 1.2% to about 1.4% carbon, about 1.6% to about 1.8% silicon, about 0.2% to about 0.4% nitrogen, about 0% to about 0.5% molybdenum, sulfur in an amount of less than about 0.01%, phosphorous in an amount of less than about 0.04%, and a balance of iron, and other inevitable/unavoidable impurities that are present in trace amounts. The turbocharger kinematic components are made at least in part using this stainless steel alloy.

A ferritic stainless steel alloy includes or consists of, by weight, about 20% to about 35% chromium, less than about 2% nickel (i.e., from 0% to about 2%), about 1% to about 4% carbon, about 1.5% to about 1.9% silicon, less than about 0.4% nitrogen (i.e., from 0% to about 0.4%), about 0.5% to about 15% molybdenum, less than about 1% niobium (i.e., from 0% to about 1%) and a balance of iron, and other inevitable/unavoidable impurities that are present in trace amounts. The turbocharger kinematic components are made at least in part using this stainless steel alloy.

Stainless steel alloys and turbocharger kinematic components formed from stainless steel alloys

Turbocharger turbine wheels including nickel-based alloys are disclosed herein. In one exemplary embodiment, a turbocharger turbine wheel includes as, at least part of its constituency, a nickel-based alloy that includes, on a weight basis of the overall alloy: about 10.5% to about 11.5% cobalt, about 9.0% to about 10.0% chromium, about 5.75% to about 6.25% aluminum, about 2.8% to about 3.3% tantalum, about 4.0% to about 4.5% molybdenum, about 2.2% to about 2.4% titanium, about 0.13% to about 0.15% carbon, about 0.03 to about 0.09% zirconium, and a majority of nickel. The nickel-based alloy excludes tungsten except in unavoidable trace amounts. The turbocharger turbine wheel may be configured for operating at about 980&#xb0; C. to about 1020&#xb0; C.

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a high-strength brass alloy includes, by mass %, about 1.3% to about 2.3% of aluminum (Al), about 1.5% to about 3.0% of manganese (Mn), about 1% maximum of iron (Fe), about 1% maximum of nickel (Ni), about 0.4% maximum of tin (Sn), about 0.5% to about 2.0% of silicon (Si), about 57% to about 60% of copper (Cu), less than about 0.1% of lead (Pb), and the balance of zinc (Zn) and inevitable impurities, with the proviso that the ratio of Si/Mn is in the range of about 0.3 to about 0.7, and with the further proviso that the 'zinc equivalent' content according to the following formula: ZnEq=Zn+Si*10&#x2212;Mn/2+Al*5 is from about 51% to about 58%.

Brass alloys for use in turbocharger bearing applications

A component for a turbocharger can include a shaft made of a first material where the shaft includes a turbine wheel end and a shaft axis; a turbine wheel made of a second material where the turbine wheel includes a shaft end and a turbine wheel axis; a weld joint formed by solidification of at least a portion of a weld pool that includes the first material and the second material, where the weld joint joins the turbine wheel end of the shaft and the shaft end of the turbine wheel and where the weld joint includes an inner radial border and an outer radial border; a reservoir disposed radially inwardly of the inner radial border of the weld joint; and a solidified portion of the weld pool disposed in the reservoir. Various other examples of devices, assemblies, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

Disclosed is an ferritic stainless steel alloy that includes, by weight, about 20% to about 22% chromium, about 0% to about 0.5% nickel, about 0.5% to about 1.0% manganese, about 1.0% to about 2.5% silicon, about 1.5% to about 2.2% tungsten, about 1.3% to about 1.8% niobium, about 0.35% to about 0.45% carbon, and a balance of iron. The invention provides an austenitic ductile cast iron alloy composition including about 2.2% to about 2.4% by weight carbon; about 3.5% to about 4.0% by weight silicon; about 28% to about 29% by weight nickel; about 2.5% to about 3.0% by weight chromium; about 0.9% to about 1.1% by weight molybdenum; and greater than about 50% iron, wherein percentages are based on the overall weight of the composition. The invention further provides articles, such as turbocharger housings, prepared using the inventive alloys.

Austenitic ductile cast iron

A titanium-aluminide turbine wheel () is joined to the end of a shaft () by utilizing a titanium surface on the end of the shaft to be joined to the wheel, and electron-beam welding the wheel onto the titanium surface on the shaft. A steel shaft () can have a titanium-containing end piece () mechanically joined (by brazing, bonding, or welding) to the end of the shaft, and the end piece can be directly electron-beam welded to the wheel. Alternatively, the shaft () can be formed as a titanium member and the end () of the shaft can be directly electron-beam welded to the wheel (). In another embodiment, a ferrous end piece () is mechanically joined to the titanium-aluminide turbine wheel () and then the end piece is directly electron-beam welded to the end of a steel shaft (). Alternatively, a silver-titanium alloy member () is sandwiched between the wheel () and a steel shaft () and is melted to join the parts together.
