A catheter insertion device () is provided for positioning and inserting a catheter (), particularly a midline catheter into a patient. The insertion device () includes an introducer needle () that extends from the distal end of the catheter during insertion. A manually operated actuator assembly () is movable with respect to a housing for deploying the catheter () over the distal end of the introducer needle (). A step-wise movement of the actuator () advances the catheter () in stages over the introducer needle (). A shuttling or indexing mechanism () advances the catheter and prevents retraction of the catheter once deployed.

Medical articles formed from a polyurethane-based resin including an ionically-charged modifier provide enhanced properties. The polyurethane-based resin is a reaction product of ingredients comprising: a diisocyanate; a diol chain extender; a polyglycol; and an anionic modifier incorporated into a backbone, as a side chain, or both of the polyurethane-based resin. Exemplary anionic modifier includes 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butyric acid (BHMBA) and/or bis-1,4-((2-hydroxypropoxy)-2-propoxy)-butane sulfonate sodium salt (SULFADIOL®-7Q). Medical articles herein either have inherent antimicrobial and/or anti-fouling characteristics or can easily bond cationic active agents to provide desirable material properties, including antimicrobial, anti-fouling, and/or radiopacity.

Polyurethane based medical articles

Bonding dissimilar materials of medical device components can be carried out by applying an adhesive on at least one surface of two components which are composed of dissimilar materials and contacting the surfaces and exposing the contacted surfaces to heat and/or irradiate the adhesive to cure the adhesive and bond the surfaces. One medical component, e.g., medical tubing, can be composed of a non-polar, polyvinyl chloride free thermoplastic polymeric material and the other medical component, e.g., a medical connector, can be composed of polyacrylate, polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (mABS), polyester, and/or a polycarbonate material. The adhesive formulation can include: (a) a polyolefin oligomer having reactive acrylate groups and alkenyl groups, (b) an initiator, and optionally (c) a solvent.

Medical articles formed from a polyurethane-based resin including a modifying oligomer provide enhanced properties. A modifying oligomer incorporated into a backbone, as a side chain, or both of the polyurethane-based resin formed by a diisocyanate, a polyglycol, and a diol chain extender has at least one, preferably two, alcohol moieties (C—OH) and a functional moiety. Exemplary modifying oligomers are: a diol-containing perfluoropolyether incorporated into the backbone, a monofunctional polysiloxane (e.g., monodialcohol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) incorporated as the side chain, and combinations thereof. Medical articles herein are self-lubricating and/or anti-fouling.

Pumping segments are described herein. In certain embodiments, a peristaltic pumping segment include a tubing segment, a plunger, a downstream occluder, and an upstream check valve. The plunger is movable to selectively expand the pumping volume to draw in fluid flow and contract the pumping volume to administer the fluid flow. The occluder is movable to selectively engage against the downstream portion to prevent fluid flow from the downstream portion during expansion of the pumping volume and to permit fluid flow from the pumping volume through the downstream portion during contraction of the pumping volume. The check valve outlet is in fluid communication with the pumping volume, and the valve element is configured to permit fluid flow from the valve inlet to the pumping volume during expansion of the pumping volume and to prevent fluid flow from the pumping volume to the valve inlet during contraction of the pumping volume.

An intravenous therapy system may include a curved needle; and a curved catheter formed around the outside surface of the curved needle; wherein, upon insertion of a first length of the curved needle and curved catheter into a patient's body, a curvature angle of the curved needle and curved catheter causes the curved needle and curved catheter to intersect axially with a blood vessel in the patient's body.

Medical articles formed from a polyurethane-based resin including an ionically-charged modifier provide enhanced properties. The polyurethane-based resin is a reaction product of ingredients comprising: a diisocyanate; a diol chain extender; a polyglycol; and an ionically-charged modifier incorporated into a backbone, as a side chain, or both of the polyurethane-based resin. Embodiments include the ionically-charged modifier is a combination of anionic and cationic modifiers. Embodiments include the ionically-charged modifier is zwitterionic. Medical articles herein either have inherent antimicrobial and/or anti-fouling characteristics or can easily bond ionic active agents to provide desirable material properties, including antimicrobial, anti-fouling, and/or radiopacity.

Pump assemblies for fluid flow are provided. A pump assembly includes a fluid flow pump, a first tubing pathway configured to receive a fluid input tube and a second tubing pathway configured to receive a fluid output tube. A non-contact tubing dimension measurement assembly is configured to measure a tubing outside diameter (OD). Methods of operating a fluid flow pump are also provided.

A medical pumping system is provided. The medical pumping system includes a fluid pump having a fluid inlet connection, a fluid outlet connection, an actuator and a backing surface. A tube of an intravenous set is disposed between the fluid inlet connection and the fluid outlet connection of the fluid pump, and disposed between the actuator and the backing surface, and a binding contact interface. The tube and the actuator are coupled together by the binding contact interface. The actuator is configured to actively pull a portion of the tube into an open position during a pump cycle. A medical pump and an infusion set are also provided.

In example embodiments, an example catheter has a relatively increased radiopacity and echogenicity to facilitate a clinician with detecting the catheter with ultrasound imaging and/or x-ray imaging methods to assist the clinician with the insertion, placement, and/or maintenance of the catheter, for example.

Medical articles formed from a polyurethane-based resin including a modifying oligomer provide enhanced properties. A modifying oligomer incorporated into a backbone, as a side chain, or both of the polyurethane-based resin formed by a diisocyanate, a polyglycol, and a diol chain extender has at least one, preferably two, alcohol moieties (C&#x2014;OH) and a functional moiety. Exemplary modifying oligomers are: a diol-containing perfluoropolyether incorporated into the backbone, a monofunctional polysiloxane (e.g., monodialcohol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) incorporated as the side chain, and combinations thereof. Medical articles herein are self-lubricating and/or anti-fouling.

Catheter tubing comprises: an elongate body comprising a base thermoplastic polyurethane; and a compounded thermoplastic polyurethane co-extruded with the base thermoplastic polyurethane to provide a section of catheter tubing discrete from the elongate body, the compounded thermoplastic polyurethane comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane and a radiopaque material, wherein the catheter tubing comprises a first elastic modulus under first conditions prior to entry into a patient; and wherein when exposed to second conditions comprising two or more in vivo stimuli for a duration of time the catheter tubing comprises a second elastic modulus that is not more than fifty percent of the first modulus.

Tubing, such as medical tubing for administration of intravenous fluid, can include an outer layer on an inner layer, and, optionally additional layers, in which at least the outer layer and the inner layer are made of a same polymeric material but the outer and inner layers have differing amounts or differing types of a plasticizer such that a hardness of the outer layer is greater than a hardness of the inner layer.
