An apparatus and method of registering a panel is disclosed. The panel is held in a frame. The frame includes a transparent plate that covers the panel. The transparent plate has a pattern on at least one surface. Next, an image of each one of a number of registration targets on the surface of the panel is received. The image is received through the transparent panel. The actual location of each one of the registration targets relative to the pattern is then determined.

A system, method and article of manufacture is disclosed that provides an improved, more efficient, laser beam modulator and splitter. The combined device includes a crystal with a horizontal cross-sectional shape of a pentagon. The crystal includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and a first through fifth sides. The first side and the second side are substantially parallel. An absorber is mounted on the third side. The fourth and fifth sides are substantially opposite to the third side. The fourth and fifth sides form an angle substantially equal to 180 degrees minus the sum of a first a second Bragg angles. The crystal also includes at least one layer. For one embodiment, each layer includes an incident window on the first side, an active window on the second side and a transparent axis between the incident window and the active window. A first and a second transducer are mounted on the fourth and fifth sides.

A system, method and article of manufacture is disclosed that provides an improved, higher efficiency, more accurate laser direct imaging on a photosensitive medium on a substrate using a ultraviolet, mode-locked laser having a low average power and a short pulse width. The ultraviolet, mode-locked laser is modulated in a scophony mode. The resulting in-scan edges having improved perpendicularity relative to the underlying substrate. The resulting cross scan beginning and end having improved perpendicularity relative to the underlying substrate. The improved perpendicularity resulting in improved accuracy over the prior art.

A method is described for exposing both sides of a light sensitive sheet such as a printed circuit board panel according to imaging data. The method uses a device that has an optical system for scanning the sensitive sheet by one or more beams. The optical system scans both sides with the scan lines on one side mutually positioned with respect to the scan lines on the other side. According to one implementation, the optical system includes two optical scanning units driven by a single source, with a switch alternating the beam from the source to one then the other optical scanning unit.

A system and method is disclosed that provides an automated, flow-through, dual side, laser direct imaging process and apparatus. This provides the capability to simultaneously register and image both sides of a substrate in a continuous flow-through process. The present invention provides efficiency improvements over the prior art on several levels. First, the prior art is batch process in which substrates are imaged one (or a batch) at a time in contrast with the present invention is a continuous, flow through, sequential process whereby a first substrate is followed into the apparatus by a second substrate which is, in turn followed by a third and so forth and the second substrate begins the process through the apparatus before the first substrate completes the process through the apparatus. Second, the process time per substrate is reduced as compared to the prior art.

System, method and article of manufacture for direct image processing of printed circuit boards

The present invention relates to a device and a method for unloading a sheet medium from a vacuum drum which may be a vacuum drum of an imagesetter for example, or a vacuum drum of an input scanning machine. The unloading is facilitated by the stiffness of sheet medium. When the vacuum holding a sheet medium is released, the stiffness of the sheet medium causes the sheet to separate from the drum. A roll forces the sheet onto the drum and the motion of the drum forces the sheet medium onto a table which has been moved into proximity of the drum. The sheet travels onto a transport mechanism which eventually takes over the moving of the sheet medium without requiring synchronism between the drum rotational speed and the transport mechanism.

The present invention relates to a device and a method for loading a sheet-like medium onto a drum without tension. The drum may be a vacuum drum of an imagesetter for example, or a vacuum drum of an input scanning machine. In order to load a sheet-like medium onto a drum without any tension, the sheet-like medium is taken over by take-over means before fixing it on the drum.
