Iron ore is reacted with a reducing agent in a first zone of the multiple-hearth furnace at a temperature ranging from 800&deg; C. to 1100&deg; C. to obtain metallic iron. In addition, the gases are desulfurized using desulphurizing agents, whereby the directly reduced iron is discharged from the multiple-hearth furnace and the desulfurized gases are guided into a second zone where the iron ore is preheated to a temperature ranging from 600&deg; C. to 800&deg; C.

Ore is continuously fed into the layered furnace, deposited on the uppermost layer, and gradually transferred to the lower layer. A device in which a mixture of steam and contaminated air is first of all channelled into an upward stream and that the mixture subsequently flows as a downward stream in a vessel maintained at reduced pressure. The device further includes an arrangement for spraying an alkaline aqueous solution into the downward stream of the mixture of steam and contaminated air. The decontaminated uncondensed gases are thereby removed from the vessel by a forced and adjustable stream which creates and maintains a reduced pressure inside the vessel.

The present invention provides a new process and a new apparatus for the treatment of steel-mill slag in a vessel which allows a wet granulation of the slag without the risk of explosions. The slag is caused to flow through a taphole at the bottom of the vessel, and the flow rate of the slag is determined by means of a continuous check of the weight of the vessel. One or more jets of granulating water, the flow rate of which is adjusted as a function of the slag flow rate, are directed onto the stream of slag flowing from the vessel. The apparatus comprises a vessel containing molten slag. This vessel is equipped with weighing means, with a taphole, with a device for shutting off the taphole, with means for maneuvering the shut-off device between an operating position and a stored or parked position away from the taphole and with a device for opening or freeing the taphole, engageable through the latter in order to initiate the flow of slag.

The discharge valve of the hopper and the valve of a chamber feeding material to the hopper are regulated in such a way as to form a barrage in the base of the hopper. To control the formation of this barrage, and ensure that it will be maintained throughout a charging phase, the hopper and the chamber are weighed separately, signals being produced for the control of dosing valves. In a preferred embodiment of an apparatus for performing this process, the hopper is rotated in order to reduce segregation of the charge material particles.
