A method is provided that involves a wall configured to circumscribe and be radially adjacent a rotor. During this method, a tri-axial capacitance probe is provided that includes a tri-axial conduit with an outer conductor member. The tri-axial capacitance probe is configured to output data indicative of a characteristic of the rotor. The tri-axial capacitance probe is configured within a wall aperture in the wall. The outer conductor member is electrically coupled with the wall. The wall is configured as a housing for the tri-axial capacitance probe.

The present invention relates to an array of flow directing elements having increased flutter stability for use in turbomachinery devices. The array comprises at least one high frequency flow directing element and at least one low frequency flow directing element. In a preferred embodiment, the array comprises a plurality of alternating high frequency and low frequency flow directing elements. Each high frequency flow directing element has its three lowest frequency vibratory modes at least 2.0% higher in frequency than the three lowest frequency vibratory modes of each low frequency flow directing element. The array of the present invention has particular utility in a turbomachinery device as part of a rotor stage.

A hollow airfoil (34) for a gas turbine engine having a leading edge (50), a trailing edge (52), a pressure side (54), and a suction side (56) includes a solid region of enhanced chordal thickness (78), and buttresses (82, 84, 86, 88). The present invention airfoil is preferentially strengthened so as to reduce the risk of airfoil fracture due to impact of airfoil with successive airfoils during an airfoil loss condition.

Impact resistant hollow airfoils

A gas turbine engine fan blade having an airfoil portion and a dovetail root portion is enhanced by having spaced apart supporting ribs extend into the dovetail root portion. The supporting ribs define a plurality of hollow cavities extending into the dovetail root portion of the fan blade. The extended cavities reduce the weight of each blade and also improve the integrity of each blade.
