A monostatic laser rangefinder device including: a laser light source; a photodetector; a double-clad optical fiber coupled to a collimating and focusing device; and an optical fiber diplexer. The diplexer includes a first optical fiber forming an input port and a second, multimode optical fiber forming a first output port. The first fiber is coupled to the laser source, the second fiber is coupled to the photodetector, and the double-clad fiber forms a second output port. A numerical aperture of a light guide formed of an inner and outer cladding of the double-clad fiber is less than or equal to 0.5, and greater than 0.1. The end of the double-clad fiber facing the collimating and focusing device has a face inclined with respect to an axis perpendicular to the axis of the fiber by an angle greater than or equal to half of the arcsine of the numerical aperture.

Monostatic laser rangefinder device

A method and apparatus for high power, broad gain, high efficiency, low noise, cladding pumped fiber amplifiers and lasers. The present invention allows a much higher pump light intensity in the inner cladding of a double cladding fiber to be achieved than is possible with conventionally pumped double cladding fiber amplifiers. The present invention utilizes a fiber taper in which the inner cladding decreases from a wide to narrow portion with the fiber core remaining the same diameter.

Optical fiber amplifiers and lasers and optical pumping devices therefor and methods of fabricating same

A method and apparatus for high power, broad gain, high efficiency, low noise, cladding pumped fiber amplifiers and lasers. The present invention utilizes a fiber taper in which the inner cladding decreases from a wide to narrow portion with the fiber core remaining the same diameter. The apparatus includes a light guiding section and a light source. The light guiding section has a cladding layer surrounding a fiber core with a fiber taper. The light source is arranged to couple pump light into the side of the cladding layer at the wide diameter portion. The pump light essentially propagates along the tapered portion towards the narrow diameter portion.

Optical fiber amplifiers and lasers and optical pumping device therefor

A hermetically sealed pump module for use with fiber devices is disclosed. The method and apparatus disclosed enable a pump module to be constructed that has a high coupling tolerance and which is inexpensive and easy to manufacture. The pump module may comprise a transparent window through which a pump beam is coupled from a laser diode into the inner cladding of a double cladding fiber. The transparent window also may serve as a substrate for the inner cladding of the double cladding fiber. The laser diode is sealed within the pump module housing with a lid and the window, which is bonded to the lid. The housing may contain a heat sink, heat-spreading sub-mount and a Peltier cooler.
