Aspects for caching storage data include partitioning a storage cache to include a compressed data partition and an uncompressed data partition, and adjusting a size of the compressed data partition and the uncompressed data partition for chosen performance characteristics. A data caching system aspect in a data processing system having a host system in communication with a storage system includes at least one storage device and at least one partially compressed cache. The at least one partially compressed cache further includes an uncompressed partition and a compressed partition, where the compressed partition stores at least a victim data unit from the uncompressed partition.

By adjusting the advancement rate of an optical data storage medium in response to the amount of data to be written, and operating a laser with a minimum amount of write laser power level for the particular advancement rate to achieve a desired level of write effectiveness, data signals are written to the optical medium with a minimum amount of power. Where the optical medium comprises an optical disk, choosing the rate of disk rotation selectively establishes the advancement rate. Similarly, where the optical medium comprises an optical tape, choosing the rate of tape advancement from source reel to take-up reel selectively establishes the advancement rate. Preferably, the advancement rate is increased or decreased depending upon whether a greater or lesser quantity or write length of data resides in a write queue. The invention may be implemented, for example, to provide a process, apparatus or program storage medium useful for laser storage of digital data signals to an optical data storage medium with minimal power consumption.

A storage hierarchy has a backing store and a caching buffer store. During a series of accesses to the hierarchy by a user, writing data to the hierarchy results in data being selectively removed from the buffer store. Space in said buffer store not being allocated to data being written results in such data being written to the backing store to the exclusion of the buffer store. Removal of data increases the probability of writing data to the backing store. In a preferred implementation, the backing store is one or more disk type data storage apparatus and the buffer store is an electronic random access memory.
